The Wal-Mart Foundation is providing a $16,638 grant to the American Red Cross of Augusta .

Stephen Moss, Wal-Mart store manager in Waynesboro, Ga., presented a $1,000 check to Augusta Technical College Foundation Director Beverly Peltier to fund GED scholarships for Burke County students in Augusta Tech's Adult Education Program.

DSM Chemicals North America in Augusta donated four body armor vests to the Richmond County Sheriff's Office as an expression of DSM's gratitude and in continuing support of local law enforcement throughout the U.S. The vests are made from Dyneema fiber, one of the company's products. Two operating room lights, six pallets of sterile trays, pans and surgical steel and two pallets of medical supplies are on their way from MCGHealth Medical Center to Africa's Ivory Coast. The donation is from MedShare International, which has shipped more than 420 containers of medical aid to 73 countries to help bridge the gap between U.S. surplus and need overseas. The money will buy a shelter trailer containing important supplies such as cots, blankets and food/beverage packages. The grant also will be used to teach and train staff and volunteers on how to be prepared for and respond to disasters.
The American Red Cross of Augusta is one of 128 Red Cross chapters awarded funds as part of the Wal-Mart Foundation's initiative to support disaster response and capacity building projects nationwide.
The Wal-Mart Foundation partnered with the American Red Cross to create a $5 million Disaster Readiness and Capacity Building Grant Program. This grant will benefit communities across the country that reside near Red Cross chapters located in remote areas that often become isolated during times of disaster and whose chartered jurisdictions serve less than 1 million people, like the American Red Cross of Augusta.
