Paine places sixth at minority event

Paine College shot a team total 335 in the final round Sunday to finish sixth among NCAA Division II teams at the PGA Collegiate Minority Golf Championship in Port St. Lucie, Fla.

The Lions finished the tournament at 155-over-par.

Fayetteville State of North Carolina won its fourth consecutive title with a three-day total of 6-under 858. Lincoln University of Jefferson City, Mo., came in second, 34 strokes back. Virginia State was third.

Paine's Chauncey Davis had 79 after carding rounds of 88 and 80 to finish with a team-best total of 247. Also competing for the Lions were Jerry Rapp (85-75-89--249), Brad Freeman (88-85-80--253), Justin Hines (100-96-97--293) and Kyle Radford (87-DQ-87).

Dustin Thompson of the University of North Carolina, playing as an individual, shot 71 in the final round to come in first. Florida State's Sara Young won the women's title.

Paine's Cleveland Andrews was 23rd in the men's division.
