Bowling Green gets win, avoids sweep

Bowling Green scored twice in the fourth inning to take the lead Saturday night and went on to a 6-2 victory over the Augusta GreenJackets to avoid a sweep at Lake Olmstead Stadium.

Justin Reynolds came a home run short of a cycle for Bowling Green, going 3-for-5 with an RBI.

Georgia suspends two, banishes one

In Athens, Ga., Georgia football coach Mark Richt announced that two players have been suspended for violating unspecified team rules and a third player is off the team after also breaking rules.

Junior tight end Bruce Figgins is suspended six games and sophomore defensive end Justin Houston is suspended for two games.

Junior receiver Tony Wilson is taking a medical disqualification, avoiding suspension.

Richt didn't disclose what the players did to warrant suspension, but ESPN reported Friday, citing a "Georgia staff member," that Figgins failed a drug test.

Loss to GCSU ends USC Aiken's season

In Hickory, N.C., USC Aiken's Division II playoff run ended after just two games, losing to Georgia College & State 8-0 in the Southeast Regional.

Mandy Chandler held the Lady Pacers to just one hit and Tonya Medders hit a three-run homer to help eliminate USC Aiken (34-17).

Losing skid at eight games for Bulldogs

In Athens, Ga., Vanderbilt jumped on Georgia early with four runs in the first, and the Commodores cruised to a 9-2 win over the Bulldogs.

It was Georgia's eighth loss in a row, its longest skid since 2003.

- In Atlanta, Sean Gilmartin 's go-ahead RBI single helped spark a three-run ninth inning for Florida State, who captured an 8-6 victory over Georgia Tech.

- In Knoxville, Tenn., Whit Merrifield was 5-for-6 with a homer and four RBI and South Carolina beat Tennessee, 15-12.

- In Clemson, S.C., an eight-run third inning lifted the Tigers to an 11-3 win over UNC Wilmington.

Golf

Paine in sixth at minority tourney

In Port St. Lucie, Fla., Paine College shot a team total 336 Saturday and is in sixth place among six NCAA Division II teams at the PGA Collegiate Minority Golf Championship.

The Lions are 96-over-par for the tournament. Fayetteville State leads the Division II field at 33-over.

Paine's Cleveland Andrews , playing as an individual, is in 23rd place.

- In Goldsboro, N.C., Kevin Kisner shot a final-round 68 to finish in a tie for fourth, four shots behind champion Chris Rogers in the eGolf Tour's Walnut Creek Championship.

Kisner, who finished 15-under, was one of several players with local ties to make the cut.

David Robinson placed eighth at 14-under, Stephen Poole finished 13-under in a tie for ninth, Kyle Bradley finished in a tie for 18th at 11-under and Cortland Lowe finished 7-under in a tie for 35th.

Jay Mundy tied for 40th at 6-under, Alex Hamilton tied for 42nd at 5-under and Will Claxton tied for 46th at 4-under.

Safina takes first title of the year

In Rome, top-ranked Dinara Safina won her first title of the year by defeating fellow Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova, 6-3, 6-2, in the final of the Italian Open.

- In Madrid, third-seeded Elena Dementieva beat Bethanie Mattek-Sands 6-4, 6-1, to reach the second round of the Madrid Masters.

- In Belgrade, Serbia, Lukasz Kubot became the first Polish player to reach an ATP Tour in 26 years, downing Ivo Karlovic 7-6 (0), 6-2 at the Serbia Open to earn a matchup against Novak Djokovic, who beat Andreas Seppi, in the final.
