Injured teens charged in car theft

  • Follow Metro

Police said Friday they have charged two teenagers with robbery by force, accusing them of tricking a woman outside Kroger on 15th Street and stealing her car before crashing it into a house on Milledge Road.

Both the boy and the girl broke their right legs in Thursday night's crash. They underwent surgery and remain at Medical College of Georgia Hospital, according to police. Authorities aren't releasing their names because they are being charged as juveniles.

The boy, 14, has a history of stealing cars and was charged in Columbia County for theft by receiving a stolen vehicle last year, a Richmond County sheriff's report said. He was listed as a runaway and recently had been charged with theft by taking by the sheriff's office.

The girl, 16, had no criminal history, according to the report.

Richmond County sheriff's Investigator Cory Carlyle said about 8 p.m., the woman saw two teens who appeared distressed outside the grocery store. The teens asked for a ride home, claiming no one would drive them "because they were the wrong color," the report said.

The woman said she offered them a ride, and after taking them to Dunns Lane, they said their mother would like to thank her.

After the woman left the car to approach the house, she said, the girl got behind the wheel while the boy choked the woman from behind with a lanyard from her sunglasses.

She got away, and the teens drove off. Police caught up with them and chased them through town at speeds nearing 80 mph.

The girl lost control of the car, crashing it into a porch at a home at 297 Milledge Road, narrowly missing a man mowing his lawn, police say. The car caught fire, but it was quickly extinguished.

The boy has a history of stealing cars? Time to try him as an adult.

14 with a history of stealing cars?! How long before he's back out there not just stealing cars but assaulting people and endangering the lives of others if he is tried as a juvenille? Not good.

Since he is a repeat offender, charge him as an adult. This was a violent assaullt and his bad behavior is obviously escalating. The girl is 16 and she should know better. She can still be charged as a first time offender in adult court.

I hope they get charged with more than robbery, how about choking the woman, damage to a house and car, speeding and almost hitting a man. Soon they will be back on the streets. An idle mind is a devils workshop. Why aren't these kids respectful? They are wicked and cruel like the DEVIL.

Throw them in the clink for about 20 years. They deserve every bit of it.

This is what they call karma, good for them.

LadyCisback

they will probably do it again and again.. they will never learn a lesson..

The 14 yr old boy is a runaway. Why can't they find his parents and get them involved. I agree the kids need to be charged & punished. But they are at a stage in life where they can learn from their mistakes and turn their life around. I say get the parents involved and get them back in school so they have a chance at a good future.

Where are these children's parents? Find the parents & charge them. This is ridiculous. This should be a lesson to all the do-gooders out there -- JUST SAY NO!

Whatsup, seems the 14 year old isn't larning anything as he is a repeat offender. Should go to court as an adult.

Both the boy and the girl are potential murderers. In fact, the boy attempted to choke the woman and the girl was an accessory to attempted murder. Take them both straight to the little room where they strap them to cart and put a needle in their veins. Too bad the woman was carrying a pistol so she could have put them down right on the spot like the scum that they are. I expect our fine judges will give them both a small fine and some probation so the system can get it's kickbacks from the probation contractor. I don't want to hear crap from these kids mother's in a few years when the RC deputies have to kill them. I think we should have organized "Another One Bites The Dust" parties everytime they shoot one.
