Explore holistic medicine as an option

I am so excited to see some beginning of signs of change in Augusta from a predominantly traditional "allopathic" medical approach to a more naturopathic/holistic, greener health care.

With the World Health Organization estimating a doubling of chronic diseases -- including heart, respiratory, diabetes, stroke and cancer -- by 2015, clearly we are losing the battle, and my family and many of my friends are seeking an adjunct to healthier lives.

In the past I have had to travel to Columbia, S.C., and Atlanta for this type of education, but now the CSRA is having its own Holistic Health Fair, which was created to give our community an opportunity to speak with a wide variety of holistic health practitioners and see and experience their specialties.

It will include an amazing array of holistic health practitioners that will demonstrate their unique healing skills with valuable information available free from all sources, since the fair is intended for networking, learning and communication.

There will be workshops for young as well as old ,including by the Area Agency on Aging, and some extensive therapeutic workshops will be offered on reiki, healing touch, yoga and bodywork, as well as doulas, midwives, lactation counselors and perinatal massage therapists to provide information on birth options.

Several nutritional counselors will provide information on nutritional supplements, herbs and healthy eating. Others will show you how to clean your home toxic free and low burden products for our families and the Earth.

It's a health fair and a holistic health conference rolled into one fantastic day May 9, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Warren Road Community Center in Augusta. Admission is $5 in advance or $7 at the door; children younger than 13 are admitted free.

Anyone planning on going to this evevt should check out quackwatch.com first. Some of these things are OK, yoga is an excellent form of exercise, others like reiki or healing touch are nothing more than moneymaking scams.

doctors take classes in how to keep a patient coming back. Including more tests, more check ups, and more, more more,
to me that's a money making scam. Big Pharma selling drugs on TV in commercials, that's a money making scam. Holding hearings on health care and not allowing doctors supporting single payer insurance, that's a money making scam. In fact when the doctors tried to speak at the hearing, they were removed by DC Capitol Police. Check it out, it was on C-Span. Alternative care is great. Some is years ahead like NAET and EFT. NAET, through muscle testing can do in minutes tests that would take days with present medical systems. Conditions that people have had for years are fixed in minutes with NAET just by correcting the electrical system of the body. Alternative is fought against only because it is so effective. If it didn't work no one would be upset about it. It fixes problems rather than covering them up with drugs.

Signal Always

Yeah, they had both a Southpark and a Seinfeld episode about this. I'll stick to modern science. Holistic medicine didn't cure Malaria.

Soldout, I agree! check out this article on wrdw.com
Special Assignment: Prescription drugs bigger problem than street drugs http://www.wrdw.com/home/headlines/44558267.html

GR-10

Here is an example of modern science:
The Georgia Drugs and Narcotics Agency says prescription drug abuse is so out of control, the problem now outweighs that of street drugs, by a long shot.

Prescribed pills are more abused and more prevalent than ecstasy, cocaine, heroine and meth. Prescription drugs now come in second only to marijuana.

NAET and EFT are quackery. Therapeutic touch was debunked by A NINE YEAR OLD. They are fake. No ifs ands or buts. It's bull. No diffrent than the scam artists on tv selling colon cleansing. You might as well flush your cash down the toilet and skip the middle man. sold:"If it didn't work no one would be upset about it.". If it WORKED no one would be upset about it. It doesn't. GR: Prescription drugs are being stolen and used for recreational purposes, not what they were prescribed for, that is the problem. The sad part is that it makes many MDs hesitant to prescribe them for those who really need them.

Techlover I totally disagree on NAET and EFT; I have done my research for years, had classes, had it done to me , watched others and have never seen it fail. People need to know it is out there and try it for themselves. I am glad you know it is out there because you might need it some day when all else fails. It is great to have choices. It is easy for Christians to know which is best for them because the Holy Spirit will led you to all truth. It is easy for me to choose cheaper, non-invasive, fun, more effective, faster and drug free over the regular route. EFT even gives away the manual on how to do it. There are so many putting up with sickness that can be fixed so easily I am amazed everytime I see it.

sold: Any results you feel are due to the placebo effect or an effect on a non existent illness. I suggest you take some A & P, pathophysiology, and microbiology courses to study how the body actually works. There are no double blind scientific studies that can support any of the claims of these quacks. The only "research" these people can offer is anecdotal. Of course there is anecdotal evidence that people have been abducted and anally probed by aliens.

bdittle

TechLover, I think you dismiss the "placebo effect" too quickly. If a patient feels taken care of by holistic treatments, the body often can respond in miraculous ways. I see great value in the combination of holistic and western treatments. I'm not suggesting going to an acupuncturist to cure cancer, but going to the acupuncturist to help with chemo can be a blessing for a lot of people.

TechLover

bd: If you think you feel better, it doesn't mean you ARE better (if you are really sick at all, everyone feels crappy sometimes). The danger comes in when someone visits one of these quacks and "feels" better and is really ignoring symtoms of something that is much worse. Like I said earlier, some of this can be legit, yoga IS a good form of exercise, a proper diet IS good for you. reiki, NAET, therapeutic touch, etc are quackery and should be outlawed.

I did my best to prove NAET wrong and couldn't do it. Even a local doctor tried and failed. People who muscle test their foods for 30 days and eat only what tests good will have a health improvement they won't believe. It uses the electrical system God put in your body for our good. Anyone who ever went in a restaurant and ate a meal and something didn't seem right and later got sick has just done NAET. Anyone who has walked on a beach barefoot has done reflexology. Anyone who ever tapped on any part of their body while in deep thought has done EFT. Anytime you are uncomfortale when someone gets in your space you are doing NAET. It is all about electricity and frequency and I have that understanding from ham radio and the telephone company. Like cures like and if you understand what happens when you zero beat two frequencies the whole NAT system becomes clearer. Also NAET works on animals and un-born and young babies and they have no clue what is going on and have no mental agreement.

I for one am so very happy to see The Greening of The Garden City! Every other town in the world offers alternative medicine.
The fact that we have such a medicalized system in Augusta has kept us secluded and unaware that ther are other options for surgery, medicines, and assembly line childbirth.
Hope to see you all there!

Anyone who performs this quackery on children should be arrested for child abuse. As for adults who wish to have it done, go for it, it's your money and your life. As for Doctor (and I use that term loosely)Nambudripad, she was a chiropractor who didn't add MD to the alphabet soup after her name until 2002 by receiving her "degree" from a diploma mill med school in Antiqua. Either she is a liar or has no grasp of human physiology or both. My guess is the latter. She claims she was allergic to VITAMINS in her body and sugar. Got news for you, if your body didn't have sugar YOU WOULD DIE. A fool and his money are soon parted, unfortunately in this case, it's a fool, his money, and possible his life.

The good thing is that folks can check things out for themselves as we are blessed to have that freedom. I never call anyone a fool because of the Biblical definition. I do know the truth is the truth no matter where it comes from and a fact is a fact whether we can prove it or not. God makes life and health so simple we have to hire help to mis-understand.

TechLover

since no one uses the archaic definition of fool, let's use Webster: a person lacking in judgment or prudence. I would say that anyone who allows themselves or their family to be subjects of fake medical procedures conducted by fake medcal professionals that scientifically are impossible, ie allergic to vitamins, sugar, etc. fits the bill.

TechLover

Augustabirth: Lynn, since you are the LTE writer AND the chapter founder of ABN AND a GNLD distributer (the Amway of vitamins, $130 bucks for a dollars worth of supplements) who obviously has a financial stake in this quackfest, you or the AC might want to run a disclaimer.

Or better yet, buy an ad and not try to foist your business endeavors off on the public as a legit LTE.

Here's another difference in alternative and regular health care information:
Researcher Penelope K. Elias MD of Boston University reported recently in Psychosomatic Medicine that persons having naturally low cholesterol levels demonstrate poorer performance on a variety of cognitive tests. In this study, data was analyzed from 789 men and 1,105 women to examine the relationship between total cholesterol and cognitive performance. They found that those who had the lowest total cholesterol performed more poorly on tests of word similarities, word fluency and attention and concentration ability than patients with higher cholesterol levels. "It is not entirely surprising that lower cholesterol levels were associated with moderately lower levels of cognitive function, given that cholesterol is important in brain function," reported lead study author, Doctor Elias. The same was true for those using a drug to lower it also.

WhatsUpWithThat1

I have not done much research on some of the holistic approachs mentioned by posters, but I am for less drugs as the answer to 'curing' illness and I am for less drugs in our food. The more natural our food the healthier it is for you. Do you know what they have to do to our "fresh" fruits and vegetables you buy at the local grocery store? If you knew you wouldn't eat it. And the "fresh" meat, cows and chickens are pumped up with so many anti-biotics these days (ever wonder why anti-biotics don't work for you anymore?). Most people can rid depression by proper diet and excercise (instead of popping a pill), there are practical habits people can form to rid themselves of the mundane aches and pains. I am thinking of checking it out.

"It is difficult for a man (person) to understand something when his (their) SALARY depends on him NOT understanding it."... Upton Sinclair. I think that alot of allopaths are trying to look the other way when faced with the facts that there are alternative models that are complementary (say midwives or chiropractors etc). We all need to look at ways to improve HEALTH CARE and dumping more money into a National Medical Care Plan that gives more drugs to more people WILL NOT FIX the fact that allopathic medicine is losing the battle on so many levels! An improved immune system will take you alot further than Tamiflu for instance. Wake up and smell the garlic! By the way ladies it works great for yeast infections. I learned that at a Holstic Health Fair in California. Use a whole clove.. and tada..no more yeast infection. Clean Air, Clean Water, Toxic-Free Food, Good Education. Now there's a HEALTHIER Health Care System.
