Supervisor pools his resources

Roger Wexler runs the Augusta Aquatics Center like a business.

"That's (how) I view it -- as a business," said the aquatics supervisor. "I have a background in marketing and business, and I use that background to run the facility. That allows me to do what's best for our patrons and provide them with the best services possible."

Mr. Wexler has been the aquatics supervisor for five years. In addition to the center, he manages Henry H. Brigham Swim Center, Charles H. Evans Community Center, Brookfield Park, the splash pad on Highland Avenue and three summer pools.

"It keeps you busy, but I enjoy it," he said.

He is also the troubleshooter and trainer for the software that the Augusta Recreation and Parks department uses.

"I became the guru," he said. "Everyone knows to call me if they have any trouble with the software."

Mr. Wexler was recognized as the 2008 Recreation and Parks Employee of the Year for his dedication to the department.

Before becoming the aquatics supervisor, he worked in athletics with the department for two years. Before that, he spent more than 20 years in the chemical industry, from which he retired.

His job presents many challenges but he doesn't shy away from them, he said.

"Some people don't like having to face challenges, but I do," he said. "That's why I enjoy my job. It's always interesting. Every day is different around here."
