A man has been charged with DUI after two pedestrians were injured in a North Augusta crash Wednesday morning.

A man and woman were admitted to Medical College of Georgia Hospital, but the injuries are not life-threatening, said North Augusta Department of Public Safety Lt. Tim Pearson. He did not identify the victims.

Police charged Harvey Lee Nichols, 51, of the 300 block of Carriage Lane in North Augusta, with driving under the influence, operating an uninsured vehicle and driving with a suspended license.

According to police, Mr. Nichols' sedan was stopped in an unlighted area in the middle of two northbound lanes on Jefferson Davis Highway at 12:19 a.m.

The female pedestrian was sitting on the passenger side of the vehicle and the male was standing in the passenger doorway when the two were struck by another vehicle.

Mail deliverers will collect food Saturday

Area letter carriers will participate in the nationwide Stamp Out Hunger food drive Saturday.

People are asked to leave nonperishable foods in a sturdy bag next to their mailbox before their regular mail delivery time.

Suggested food items include canned soup, canned vegetables, pasta, rice and cereal.

Food collected will go to Golden Harvest Food Bank.

Last year, the food bank received 72,012 pounds of food from the drive, said Carrie Jones, the events and food drive coordinator.

People may also drop off nonperishable items at any area post office Saturday, she said.

For more information, contact Golden Harvest Food Bank at (706) 736-1199 or visit www.helpstampouthunger.com.

Animal control seeks owner of lost parrot

Polly wants his owner.

Columbia County Animal Care and Control workers captured a bright green parrot Wednesday after an Evans woman found it dining at her bird feeder.

Columbia County Emergency and Operations Director Pam Tucker said a Windmill Plantation resident called animal control when she saw the exotic bird.

The bird flew under her deck when the workers arrived.

They finally managed to capture it and take it to the Appling facility.

Anyone who is missing a parrot can call the facility at (706) 541-4077.

Writers group to tour outdoor attractions

Journalists, photographers and other members of the Georgia Outdoor Writers Association will be in Columbia County and Augusta this week for the organization's annual conference and awards banquet.

"We move our annual conferences around the state to give members a chance to experience and report on the variety of outdoor activities Georgia has to offer," said Jimmy Jacobs, the group's board chairman.

The association is staff and freelance journalists who cover outdoor recreation and conservation.

Its membership averages about 40 and includes journalists from newspapers, magazines and trade publications.

Members will be visiting Augusta Canal, Savannah River shoals, Thurmond Lake, Phinizy Swamp Nature Park, Heggie's Rock and other local outdoor areas.

The awards banquet and other events will be headquartered in Columbia County.

"Because Columbia County is so blessed with natural resources, the Georgia Outdoor Writers Association is the perfect group for us to showcase our product to," said Beda Johnson, executive director of the Columbia County Convention & Visitors Bureau, which helped organize the event.

Local soldier wins $1,000 on 'Millionaire'

Spc. James, an Army mental health specialist stationed at Fort Gordon, appeared Wednesday on the syndicated television game show Who Wants To Be a Millionaire. The episode was recorded in October.

After answering the first few questions, Spc. James quickly used his lifelines on questions about a medical condition called photic sneeze syndrome and udon and soba noodles.

He used his final two lifelines trying to determine whether the title character in The Story of Edgar Sawtelle was bedridden, blind, mute or claustrophobic. Using his Double Dip lifeline, which allows two guesses on one question, Spc. James guessed claustrophobic and blind. The answer was mute.

I agree with Belle. I had to read it several times and it still didn't make sense.

If the driver's car was stopped how could it hit 2 people. Secondly, How did they get hit if they were not stopped in the road? And if the female was sitting in the car that makes her a passenger not a pedestrian. This is horribly written and confusing.

I copied it because the AC will change the story later and commentators will wonder what we are talking about.

i know

it says sitting "on" the passenger side of the car not "in" the passenger side. the car was stopped in the road and another car came up from behind and hit the car. This was in yesterdays paper and explained it a little better.

I'm still tying to figure out who Edgar Sawtelle, is?

APiratesLife4Me

Sitting on the car...was the guy like, standing..ummm real close to her? Like REAL close?

The Story of Edgar Sawtelle is a retelling of Shakespeare's Hamlet in rural Wisconsin. The titular character is a mute boy who, after his father is killed, runs away from but then returns to his usurped home, hoping to prove his suspicions that his uncle murdered his father. I just love Wikipedia!!! lol

So, in Columbia County, if you report a parrot on the loose, Animal Control will rush right on over to capture said parrot before it can fly away. AMAZING!! I live in Richmond county and called Animal Control because two stray PIT BULLS had wandered into my living room, (door open for fresh air) and they never did come to collect the animals. I called the Police to tell them to call Animal Control, but that didn't work either. They did send a deputy to the house, but she didn't do anything to help. We were finally able to coax the dogs back outside with some lunch meat. Then the dogs thought that they had a new home, and just hung around for a couple of days for more hand outs.
