Riverfront stadium proposal is folly

  • Follow Letters

With the good riddance of the current Augusta-Richmond Coliseum Authority soon, I think that Augusta should build a third baseball stadium where the arena now stands and call it the James Brown Memorial Stadium.

This baseball stadium, along with Lake Olmstead Stadium and the planned Deke Copenhaver white elephant on the riverfront, would give Augusta three baseball stadiums. This will most certainly draw in huge crowds from the CSRA and outlying areas. Since poor people can no longer afford to pay to ride the city buses, the fans will have no trouble gaining easy access to any of the three baseball stadiums.

Please, Mayor Copenhaver, I say this only with sarcasm. Please don't call Cal Ripken or Gov. Sonny Perdue and start drawing up plans for a third stadium.

I do not like being wrong on matters. I always thought that Ed McIntyre was the most disgraceful excuse for a mayor that Augusta could ever have. But to my dismay, Copenhaver has proven me wrong. He has done nothing during his term as mayor except to have his photograph taken a zillion times and come up with the biggest lame-brained idea -- the riverfront stadium -- since the Coliseum Authority was chosen.

Don Tate, Evans

Mayor Copenhaver has done

Mayor Copenhaver has done well and I am sure means well in this area. However, we have a stadium that never fills up and moving it will not change that. Not a single tax dollar should be spent on such silliness escpecially when we can not even open all of the parks and recreation facilities this summer for our troubled youth, have inadequate funding for all of our public safety agencies from 9-1-1 to the fire department, Sheriff's Office and private EMS services. We have priorities in this community and a new stadium shouldn't even be on the list.

I'm with Don Tate. Not only

I'm with Don Tate. Not only should Augusta not have a downtown stadium, but pavement should be ripped from the streets and replaced with the natural dirt. Why bother improving the city when it just makes people exaggerate when writing these letters. We should just invest in subsidy programs.

The ballpark is a loser no

The ballpark is a loser no matter how much I want it not to be. Great idea, but bad business.

With Cal Ripken all in the

With Cal Ripken all in the mix, surely HE will never let it be called James Brown Memorial Stadium LOL, we know he wants it named after him. Heck you can't get many people to attend shows at the James Brown Arena DOWNTOWN, now a stadium. There is nothing wrong with the current stadium, they should build twin towers on that spot, build the skyline in Augusta. Deke and company needs to go to Alexandria VA and tour Crystal City and Pentagon City, or even downtown Arlington.

RE: "We should just invest

RE: "We should just invest in subsidy programs." Well, well, ole patriciathomas has stumbled into the truth with her lame attempt at sarcasm. The Dekecal Memorial Monument to Monumental Egos would be just that -- a huge taxpayer-subsidized white elephant made of concrete and steel. It is truly stunning that ole patricia is so consistently against all forms of government spending, except this white elephant and huge sums of money used to invade and destroy other sovereign nations and to kill their inhabitants. Methinks patricia must own stock in the Ripken Baseball enterprise. Ole Cal is so obviously determined to enhance his financial standing by cutting deals with the rubes and hayseeds of Augusta politics. Seems like patricia has aligned herself with the camp that is mightily trying to get its dirty little fingers into the taxpayers' pocketbooks. Wow, is that the best that Augusta "conservatives" can do?!

Wow...the naysayers by the dozens. No wonder Augusta is still living in the19th century. Grow up people! We need fresh new facilities in this city. It will be a HUGE boost to downtown and draw more people to the games than the existing one does. To add, this will be a great facility to host other great events. If people continue to put dampers on every good idea that comes frorth, we will never be anymore than just your below average city. God Help Us!!!

TheONe, tel us what type of "other great events" would use the ball park? Knave, FYI PT is a man. As for Deke's performance as Mayor, Idisagree with the ball park down town, but he has done many things to attract new businesses to the area for which he had not been given credit and a great job as a non-voting Mayor.

Gosh, first the paper's owner

Gosh, first the paper's owner (thru his puppets on the editorial board) voices his disdain for the ONE project on the river his hands aren't in....now ALL you see in this paper are letters submitted that oppose the project - DESPITE the fact that no financing plan has been even laid out, yet. Odd, eh? Folks, THIS is why the daily newspaper business is struggling. Here's an idea...print the story - just the facts, Chronicle. The fact is - there's no OTHER use for this property that would impact the economy of downtown and its businesses as would a 5,000 seat baseball/multi-use stadium. If there's an idea (and no, a museum or performing arts venue would NOT draw as many visitors as a stadium would - please...) that trumps it, let's hear it.

Jack, the stadium could/would

Jack, the stadium could/would host The Ga/SC Border Bash wih much more room and accomodation... the stadium would/could host college baseball conference tournaments (both preseason and postseason), as well as major outdoor concerts (Augusta currently lacks a venue that could concievably hold 10,000 for a major concert draw. If properly designed, it could also host high school and small college football games. It'd be a TERRIFIC addition for accomodating the thousands of fireworks watchers on Independence Day events, as well, and could actually serve as the central entertainment venue for that (stage, concerts, etc.)
