Wolfpack out after first loss of season
COLLINS HILL 4, GREENBRIER 0

The scouting report Greenbrier boys soccer coach Chip Warren received on his team's quarterfinal opponent told the story.

Collins Hill was big and fast, a team unlike any the Wolfpack had faced this year.

And the Screamin' Eagles handled the previously undefeated Wolfpack, winning 4-0 to knock Greenbrier from the Class AAAAA playoffs.

"We haven't seen speed like that all year," Warren said.

Collins Hill (17-3) advanced to play Walton in Wednesday's semifinal, a rematch of last season's Class AAAAA title game. The Wolfpack were bounced in the quarterfinal for the second year in a row after trips to the semifinals in 2006 and 2007.

This season was Greenbrier's first in Class AAAAA. And after an easy run to the Region 2-AAAA title, the Wolfpack (17-1) finally saw the best the classification offered.

The No. 1-ranked Screamin' Eagles ran the Wolfpack all over the field in the first half, using precise passing to keep the pressure on. Collins Hill junior Malcom Miller scored two of his three goals in the first half, outrunning the defense to slip a shot in the left corner and soaring to head in another off a corner kick.

As a light rain developed at the half, the Wolfpack trudged up the hill to their locker room. They had not faced a halftime deficit all season.

"We did a lot of watching in the first half," Greenbrier junior Hunter Norton said. "They passed the ball around us really well. We spent a majority of the half just chasing the ball around."

At halftime, the Wolfpack talked about needing a quick goal in the second half to keep it close, and that if a Kelechi Erondu header in the first half had gone in instead of off the right post, things would be different.

Warren's team started the final 40 minutes with more intensity, but it could not muster a score.

The Screamin' Eagles closed the door with two goals the first 11 minutes of the second half. The first came on Miller's header and the second on a 30-yard blast from Aldo Lara off a set piece.

"I think we had a good season, especially for our first year in AAAAA, I think that's awesome," Norton said. "It was just an awesome team we played."
