The first weekend in May brings a variety of events to Augusta and Aiken, ranging from Hal Holbrook portraying Mark Twain tonight at Bell Auditorium to a celebration of country music Sunday at A Day in the Country Festival at the Riverfront Marina in Augusta.

HISTORIC LOFT TOUR: Beginning at noon. There are 10 stops on the tour and tickets cost $20. Pick up a tour map and purchase tickets at tour headquarters in front of 1002 Broad St. Call (706) 724-0436.

ROCK 4 THE RIVER FESTIVAL: Soulhound, Lingo, 48Volt, Phantom Wingo and 40 Going North perform for the Rock 4 the River festival, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Riverfront Marina, 298 Prep Phillips Drive. The event benefits Savannah Riverkeeper to keep the Savannah river mercury-free. Tickets cost $5, $25 for VIP admission includes food and beer. ART IN THE PARK SIDEWALK CHALK CONTEST: Artists will transform the walkways surrounding the Columbia County Amphitheater and Memorial Gardens into works of art at the inaugural Art in the Park Sidewalk Chalk Contest.

The event will be held 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the amphitheater and gardens behind the Columbia County Library in Evans, and will also feature drama, dance and other fine art demonstrations.

A $10 registration fee is required to participate in the chalk drawing contest, and participants receive one box of chalk. Judging will take place at 5 p.m., and prizes will be awarded.

LATINO FEST: Latino Fest at Fort Gordon's Barton Field features music, dancing, carnival rides, a flea market, children's activities, and car, truck and bike shows. Locosporjuana performs at noon today. You need a photo ID to enter Fort Gordon if you're 16 or older. See fortgordon.com.

A DAY IN THE COUNTRY: Gates open at 11 a.m. at Augusta Riverfront Marina for the annual A Day in the Country Festival. Performers include Darryl Worley, James Otto and Colt Ford, The Lost Trailers and Jamie Buckley. The festival will also feature karaoke, the Foot Loose and Fancy Free Cloggers and The Rhythm & Class Cloggers. Admission is $20 advance, or $25 day of show. The marina is at 298 Prep Phillips Drive.
