AIKEN --- The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is investigating an Aiken jail fight that left one inmate dead and another charged with murder.
According to a statement released by SLED, Dale Sengelman, 55, of Orangeburg, an inmate accused of lewd acts on a minor, suffered a fatal injury after he was punched in the face by fellow prisoner Andrew York shortly after dinner Tuesday night.
He fell, hitting his head and fracturing his skull, and later died at Medical College of Georgia Hospital, according to SLED.
SLED agents say Mr. York has been charged with murder.
Mr. York, 37, has been in the jail since March on a breach of trust charge. It wasn't immediately clear if he had an attorney, the Associated Press reported Wednesday.
Authorities haven't said what sparked the fight.
Mr. Sengelman had been in the jail since July, when he was charged with two counts of lewd acts on a minor younger than 16.
The Orangeburg Times & Democrat reported last summer that Mr. Sengelman was arrested after allegations that he had fondled two children while working in Salley.
