Confederate Memorial Day is outdated

  • Follow Letters

My visit to the Georgia Department of Revenue on April 26 reminded me that America is either a country of great tolerance or great hypocrisy. The office was closed in observance of Confederate Memorial Day.

Can someone who is not an apartheid sympathizer or undercover racist intelligently explain why this is still observed in the 21st century? Why must we be reminded of the lynchers and not the lynched? Where is the fairness in this practice?

Let's be fair and designate April 27 as Lynch Victims Memorial Day.

Kevin, on April 27th only a die-hard racist would be "reminded of the lynchers and not the lynched?" The loyal men of the South, of which most, if not all, were not slave-holders, fought for States Rights (as defined in the 10th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution). That there was injustice in the treatment of black's pre-i862 is undeniable and that there was injustice in the treatment of blacks following the civil war that ended in 1865 is undeniable as well. However, the 250,000 or more Southern men that gave their lives for "the cause" were not all guilty of lynching anyone, sir! And, if the truth were really known, I doubt that even 1/100 of 1 percent would fit that description. Please, let the South honor their fallen ancestors. And, FYI, I am from the Northwest; certainly not a Southerner. GGpap

At least Palmer was smart enough to spell correctly and to capitalize "Confederate Memorial Day." Obviously, his ignorance of things Confederate past spelling and capitalization is both wide and deep. Maybe he'll read GGpap's comments and learn from them a few facts about The South during our Confederate period.

In the world's eye, the justification of a "Confederate Memorial Day" in America is no different than German people attempting to justify a "Third Reich Day."

thunder2whisky

Our MEN died for this CONFEDERATE DAY we are in celebration of all who died in this war. LONG LIVE THE SOUTH

pthsssh

"Most of not all" of the men living in the South were slave-owners? GGpap - get a grip. Bold faced lies don't help the credibility of your opinions.

fred1217

Most or not all of the men fighting in Iraq do not own oil stocks or have ties to Halliburton, so what's the difference? It's the "Golden Rule" in play here. The man with the Gold makes the rules... The Civil War was fought for the States Rights to Own Slaves.

Kevin, before you visit a federal government office or a state of Georgia government office, check out the list of government holidays/closings for National Holidays and state of Georgia. Other than that bit of advice, moron, shut up and go away.

HotFoot

Setting aside the legitimacy of the "cause", answer me this, apologists: Why is honoring the men who died for the Confederacy worthy of a separate holiday from Memorial Day, which is good enough to honor the rest of our country's war dead? Why do you think you're more special than those who died in Vietnam or during WWII or Iraq or any other conflict? I think it demonstrates the separatist mindset you still cling to...and that's truly counter-productive, if not pathetic.

bone

yeah, well, the NAACP is outdated, too. take away MLK day and i'll be fine with seeing confederate memorial day removed from the books, too.

HotFoot

bone, you've just undermined your own position. What does the NAACP have to do with it...? Unless, of course, Confederate Memorial Day is about race. Well....?

Grasshopper

I guess you would have to condemn Abraham and most of the great men listed in the Old Testament, since most of them did have slaves. Abraham ,who God chose, had slaves. The selling of slaves still goes on in Africa today. The war between the states was not over slavery. The people who fought and died were not the big plantation owners, but small farmers and men who were just defending their state. They stood up to a federal government that was in violation of the tenth admendment. Slavery was not abolished until 1865. Go back and do some research on Lincoln and the unfair taxes and tarrifs that were placed on the South. Southerners were treated like second rate citizens, don't let Hollywood be your history teacher.

Grasshopper

Kevin Palmer your ignorance is evident, read the history books! Hollywood movies are there for entertainment not for educational purposes.

Dukedirtbag

must be someone who did NOT get a paid holiday the 27th, I dont care WHAT you call the day, if i get paid for not working that day i'll not complain

Dukedirtbag

if the civil was was only about slavery why did Lincoln ONLY free the slaves in the "rebelling" states?? and not the slaves in the north with his emancipation Proclimation, READ your history folks

patriciathomas

There are plenty of "holidays" that don't appeal to specific groups. GGpap, I'm sure you know your post agrees with the LTE, your last sentence not withstanding.

Ga Values

I don't understand why we have a MLK day.

TechLover

"No bill of attainder, ex post facto law, or law denying or impairing the right of property in negro slaves shall be passed [by Congress]" So why did the Confederate Constitution deny states the right to ban slavery? Judging by the posts of the Confederate apologists mentioning MLK Day, it proves that it's a race thing. Yes, movies are entertainment. Gone With the Wind and Birth of a Nation were fiction, not for educational purposes.

TechLover

Ga V; Wouldn't want to honor a man who fought and died for civil rights would we?

HotFoot

OK, so that's both Bone and GAValues who have linked it to race, their feeble arguments about honoring the Confederate war dead (by giving them a special day apart from the rest of our fallen soldiers) notwithstanding. Will ANYONE address that? It's not about slavery, but question the holiday and suddenly it's MLK Day and the NAACP that are questionable. What gives (as if I didn't know...)?

Dukedirtbag

Tech one item out of what thirty total in the CSA constitution?hardly the prime factor

Grasshopper

Mr. King is one of my Hero's! He was a great southern man, who fought for what he believed in, and gave his life for a great cause.

momofthree

ReasonRules, have you ever heard of Patriots Day??? Well it is celebrated the Monday prior to Confederate Memorial Day, and the Boston Marathon is run on that day. Mass. Gvt. offices are closed in observance of the men who fell during the Civil War, North and South. I guess we should no longer celebrate Columbus day, heck he only discovered America (or so he thought) we should not celebrate MLK day because he's dead and a black man got into the white house, we should no longer celebrate Christmas, Chaunnaka, New Years Day, the 4Th of July, heck they have all out served their purposes as well, only reason people even care is because they get a day off of work right?? Crawl back in a hole and go as far south as you can. Born in the north but Southern by the grace of those who have welcomed me home and God. (oops, Reason, did God offend you too....)

dashiel

The Civil War was the deadliest in American history (more than 600,000 soldier deaths). Do revisionist "historians" propose that we just get over it, that our ancestors don't deserve to be remembered? Blood is thicker than political correctness.

TechLover

duke: That was one example. If you read the Confederate Constitution, you will find slavery mentioned numerous times.

americanveteran

Kevin Palmer, you must be a racist and hate monger to make the stupid statement that you made.

We honor Confederate Soldiers that fought for the Confederate States of America. Here in the South, we still love our heritage, our history, and we still love to honor the brave men and women who fought the second revolution in this country. Both black and white fought to defend the Confederate States of America and just because the Yankees had superior numbers in manpower and equipment and finally overcame the Southern Armies due to these facts, does not mean that the North was right and the South was wrong. Might does not make right and for what the South had to endure for 12 years of "Occupied - Military - Reconstruction" gives us (Southern People) the absolute right to have a holiday to HONOR OUR FALLEN HEROES FROM THE LATE WAR OF Northern Aggression. Also, if it bothers you so much, there is plenty of room above the Mason-Dixon Line for you to move to.

pthsssh

amvet - Amen! Thank you for your service, Sir.

TechLover

am:The South WAS wrong. I find it interesting that you only choose to honor 4 years out of 100s. BTW: The South fired the first shots.

slippery 25

Over 600,000 Americans died in the war, about 300,000 from the Southern states. It is appropriate to set aside a day to honor them.

2tired2argueanymore

Why don't we just re-name it civil war commemoration day? It can remind us of how we became a nation divided instead of a nation united. A time when brother turned against brother. Perhaps if we quit trying to divide us into our little groups or categories through diversity training and turned to training people in how much we are all alike we could become the untied once again. Let's be Americans. I know it seems so wrong but can't we try?
