Late goal bails out Wolfpack
GREENBRIER 2, EAST COWETA 1

The Greenbrier girls soccer team spent most of Tuesday night inventing ways not to score.

The Wolfpack blasted uncontested shots over the goal and through the football uprights. They directed pinpoint crosses everywhere but past the East Coweta goalkeeper. Mostly, they dinked the ball to open teammates in the offensive third instead of driving the ball forward.

"That's soccer for you," Greenbrier coach Alex Heider said.

This is a dangerous proposition in the playoffs, but Greenbrier skirted any damage with 38.8 seconds left when freshman Bay Daniel's goal delivered a 2-1 victory over East Coweta in the Class AAAAA second round. The No. 7 Wolfpack meet their toughest test of the season at home Friday night in a state quarterfinal: No. 3 North Gwinnett, which hasn't lost since Feb. 13. Greenbrier is among the last eight teams remaining in the playoffs for the first time since 2005.

"One thing about this team is that we've learned to become resilient," Heider said. "We're excited about what we can do."

In the context of how many quality scoring chances Greenbrier earned, Daniel's goal barely registered a threat. In the final minute, Stormi Childs flicked a long cross toward one of the posts, and Daniel touched it into the net so quick it looked like it had slid by the post and into the side netting.

"I wish it had," East Coweta coach Bert Keown said. "They had so many good shots. It's tough to decide it on one that was not-so-good."

Greenbrier dominated possession in the midfield. In fact, every time the Indians cleared the ball with a goal kick or a punt, Greenbrier won the ball in the air and prepared to again advance toward the goal.

"They outplayed us in the midfield," Keown said.

East Coweta remained in the game, Keown said, because of alert play from goalie Chelsa Hise.

Greenbrier had so dominated possession in the early moments following its goal at 33:29, it hardly seemed fathomable the game was tied at halftime. About three minutes before halftime, though, East Coweta equalized when Amber Wright slipped behind the defense, collected a long pass and whistled a shot into the goal off one bounce.

Twice in the second half Wright zoomed past the defense in the middle of the field with Greenbrier goalie Paige Eber the only obstruction between her and the goal. Both times, though, Greenbrier's defenders recovered and forced shots wide of the goal.

Senior Hillary Wilson scored Greenbrier's first goal off a rebound from an Alex Cohen shot.
