3 men are arrested in armed robbery of bank

Police have arrested three North Augusta men in Thursday's armed robbery of the Bank of America on Martintown Road.

Officers have charged Quinton R. Harmon, 19, of the 200 block of Bryant Avenue; Roosevelt Johnson Jr., 19, of the 600 block of Celeste Avenue; and David J. Dixon, 18, of the 500 block of Dove Street, with bank robbery.

At 12:33 p.m., one of the men brandished a gun and demanded cash.

North Augusta lawyer Jim Huff attempted to stop the thief in the parking lot by firing two shots. The man fled into a wooded area behind the bank. No one was injured during the incident.

Women hospitalized after shooting, wreck

Two women were hospitalized Monday night after one shot the other and then attempted to flee, according to Richmond County sheriff's Investigator Charles Mulherin.

Details of the shooting, including the women's names, weren't immediately available. Investigator Mulherin said one woman shot the other at a residence, then injured herself when she wrecked a Chevy Blazer in a nearby yard while trying to escape.

The shooting happened about 8:45 p.m. in the 1700 block of Brown Road, he said. Both women were taken to Medical College of Georgia Hospital and Clinics. Their conditions were unavailable.

Aiken City Council OKs hospital office plan

A revised plan for a University Hospital office complex off Silver Bluff Road in Aiken received a first reading approval by the Aiken City Council Monday night.

The vote was 6-1, with councilman Dick Dewar the lone dissenter. The proposed revision calls for just one building as opposed to an initial long-range plan that included the possibility of three buildings at a total of 72,000 square feet on 7.5 acres. The new plan calls for one 17,000-square-foot building.

Dear Mr. Huff: Thanks for trying to shoot the robbers. I'm sorry you missed.

andywarhol

So I guess it isn't illegal to shoot a "fleeing" suspect? I always heard if they are turned an running away that you're no longer in danger, therefore cannot shoot.

patriciathomas

It's a moot point, andywarhol, since all Huff did was shoot AT the suspected robbers.

pantherluvcik

I thought it was illegal to fire a gun in a public setting like that period, unless there was an immediate threat. And since they were fleeing i'm guessing there was no threat. Everybody's trying to be a hero, he should have been arrested. What if he had hit an innocent bystander walking or driving by. Shame on the police for letting him get away with that, you can't even shoot an intruder in your yard unless your threatened, they have to actually be in the house. I'm guessing he didn't live in the bank, and even if he did they were in the parking lot. Outrageous!!!

andywarhol

Don't get me wrong; I'm all for shooting them coming or going.

getalife

Maybe he just wanted them to flee a little faster and to warn them not to come in his direction. Some robbers might stop and give up when being shot at?? Whatever the motive, it could have been dangerous for bystanders.

HYPOCRITES 08

I believe that the law allows for using deadly force against fleeing felons, if you believe that they will pose a future threat to the public. I feel that it is poetic justice for the lady that shot the other lady, to be sharing a trauma room with her.

uptheseventhplanet

I suppose three armed thugs and robbers are no danger to the public at all. Even if they were fleeing has no commenter ever heard of turning and firing at someone--even an innocent bystander. Get a grip.

Way to go Jim.......!! I see a Citizen of the Year award coming your way.

pantherluvcik, you thought like LIT! He was full-of-it, too!

EMAGUY

Hey, it's nice to see folks supporting Jim. I support him, too. It's very difficult for me to say I support an attorney, in anything!

pofwe--hahahaha You are the first person outside of my family that I have ever heard use that expression! That's an oldie and goodie. I agree with you, too.

mad_max

Shooting, or shooting at, an armed suspect during the commission of a felony don't sound illegal to me. When the bank robber came out the door brandishing a weapon, anyone in the parking lot was automatically in danger and justified in protecting themselves. That is the way I see it and I hope that is the way the police would see it. If you are a thug and go around thieving like the scumbags your are, expect to be shot, or in this case, shot at. Good for Mr. Huff. Give him a medal.

SusieQ

Thanks Jim Huff for being a great citizen!! I think you acted in the right way. SusieQ

Shoot them... in the back, in the front, or on either side... just shoot them. They are scum to begin with and we need to get back to the mindset of doing away with them... including capitp; punishment. For some bleeding heart reason this country has moved away from taking their own protection as their right. Shame on us for letting the thugs and hoodies get the upper hand.

triscuit

All of the suspects were teenagers...guess they did not want to start with a gas station or convenience store...they went straight up to being bank robbers...what morons. What person of ANY age honestly thinks they will get away with robbing a bank these days?

Panther's a moron.

ListenAndLearn

The only problem I see with this whole thing is that he missed... twice. Back to the range Jim. Better luck next time. HYPO, that was funny. I thought the same thing.

ListenAndLearn

panther, question: It didn't say in the article that they were running FROM Jim, just from the bank, so, with that much information, couldn't it be possible that he was shooting at an approaching felon? And, neverminding that, shooting at a fleeing felon makes the list on most of LE's "things to do". That this was a private citizen doesn't matter if he knew his backdrop & took the shots. I'm just sorry he missed.

It is amazing how cynical and vicious people can become when they have no clue about the young men who are alleged to have robbed the bank. Life leasons will be unfortunate for their poor choice however the community and school in which they were a part of are in shock. These young men had no criminal history and were excellent students and well mannered around to those of us who knew them. I pray for their families as this is a tough time for them. For those so vicious on their comments just remember: "Why do you see the speck in your brother's eye but fail to notice the beam in your own eye? Mark 7 v 3

I believe that Jim Huff is also a Constable and licensed to carry a concealed weapon in SC.

First I would like to say that the sophomoric comments made by KK, triscuit, Lou Cipher, SusieQ, APiratesLifeForMe and others are extremely out of line. Who are you to make comments like that? Who are you to wish death upon these people? What? You are a tax paying citizen..does that give you the right? If that's your answer than you are clearly a joke. You are no better than the ones who robbed the bank. It's even worse if you are an adult with children of your own. What will they think knowing that their parents are making death threats? Some role model you guys are. They made their mistake and they will live with the consequences. Let them live with them. Yes you have a right to voice your own opinion but your opinions are nothing more than juvenile and they reflect you in such a great light. As for Jim Huff, his license should be revoked. You can use a deadly force +1 is if the suspect poses a threat towards you. The suspect did not pose a threat towards Mr. Huff therefore he had no right to fire shots. Let's not forget that he was in a VERY public setting and could have hit any innocent bystander. This was a lack of experience and I believe he should be punished.
