Aaron Scicchitano, 13, and his mother, Tara Scicchitano, talk as they sit on the bench during an adult hockey league game.

This is the first year Mrs. Scicchitano has played on the same team with her eldest son. She has played with the men for four years.

The cancer nurse said she uses hockey to relax and also be a team player with her son.

"It's my stress reliever," said Mrs. Scicchitano.

"I play with my son because my children are like my best friends," she said.

"It's wonderful to get out there with your kid and connect on a level that's different than a parent-child role," she said. "It keeps you young, too."

"Your kids are children for such a short time, in the blink of an eye they are grown up and gone," she said. "So by playing hockey with them, it allows me to watch and hang onto that child a little longer."

Aaron likes playing with his mother.

"It's fun and interesting talking to each other on the ice," Aaron said. "You can also get to know your family a little better when you're playing together."

Mrs. Scicchitano is organizing the first women's ice hockey team in Augusta. For more information about the hockey leagues, call (706) 278-6345.
