Dems knew of interrogation techniques

  • Follow Letters

The mainstream media is finally catching up to something the conservative media reported for seven years: Congressional Democrats and Republicans gave permission to the CIA to use enhanced interrogations on captured jihadists.

President Obama's national security director, Adm. Dennis Blair, wrote a letter recently that stated: "From 2002 through 2006 when the use of these techniques ended, the leadership of the CIA repeatedly reported their activities both to Executive Branch policymakers and to members of Congress, and received permission to continue to use the techniques."

Blair went on to contradict the president by saying the enhanced interrogations did work. The declassified memos show that the mastermind of 9-11 confessed that a 9-11-style attack was in the works for Los Angeles, and he detailed which buildings were to be hit.

Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D.-Calif., and other members of Congress on both sides of the aisle were briefed by the CIA, some more than 30 times, about enhanced interrogations and no objections were made. In fact, Peter Goss, a former Florida congressman who was in the meetings and later became CIA director, said: "We were briefed, and we certainly understood what CIA was doing. Not only was there no objections, there was actually concern about whether the agency was doing enough."

For seven years we have listened to congressional Democrats lie and pretend they did not approve of these interrogations. Have the mainstream media thought to ask them why they lied as a group for seven years, or whose idea it was?

In 1947 the U.S. Congress passed a law that declared waterboarding illegal, and subject to criminal charges if the law was violated. In 1978 Congress passed a law requiring court warrants for electronic surveillance related to terrorism or espionage. This law was later revised in order to allow the government to engage in wire tapping prior to obtaining an official court warrant, BUT it still requiring the government to apply for a warrant within 2 days following the initial date of initiating a wire tap. GWB refused to accede to both the 1947 and the 1978 law; which was a clear violation of the Fourth Amendment. Democrats/Republicans, who cares? The bottom line for those that can take off their pseudo-patriotic blinders is that a leader (in this case GWB) is expected to set an example for his constituency; therefore, are we all to believe now that disobedience to the rule of law is the proper behavior for American citizens? It appears that some folks would answer YES to the foregoing. They would like to call folks that point out the obvious violation of these laws as the wimps, sissies, and liberals; I would prefer to call them the real traitors among us. GGpap

GGpap, us ussual you guys like to rewrite history. Where where the vaunted democrates when objection was neeeded? NOBODY OBJECTED!!! Non US citizens have no right to the constitutional protection of US citizens. Lincoln suspended Habius Corpus, Roosevelt had concentraation camps for the AMERICAN CITIZENS of Japanese desent. The vaunted Obamanation voted for FISA the same law you object to . Lets impeach Obama!!! Lets impeach Obama!!! he is violating your rights and his Government is supporting it....Lets get rid of Pilosi, she knew bout all this and didn't object....

I really don't care if those in the know were repub or dems, torture is wrong...And it doesn't matter if it so called "worked" or not. Intel derived from torture isn't trustworthy; at least that is what the former CIA interrogators are saying...There are smarter ways of getting valueable information, and in the future if torture is how we handle those we are at war with we have no right to lecture the world about ethics and morality...The world thinks we torture, and the world was right...And in the future when we go to war inevitably some of our troops, sailors and Marines will be captured, and if they are mistreated and worse tortured what can we say in protest? The rules of karma always apply to people, and to nations...

patriciathomas

GGpap, EVERY time America was attacked by an enemy force after 1947, the water boarding ruling was ignored. And, just why is it that you don't want calls from enemies coming into this country monitored? Your idea of treason and patriotism is a lot different from that of Americans. As far as crying wimp, sissy, and liberal goes, I think you cry, too soon, not guilty.

patriciathomas

Motorman, did you see the political cartoon responding to your idea of interrogation? It was in the paper just a couple of days ago. You make GGpap's comment about wimps, sissies and liberals hard to deny.

patriciathomas

Did all of the torturing discover the cure for cancer? Did all of the torturing learn the secret of anti-gravity? Did all of the torture discover Solomon's mines? Well, what good was it? Way to stay on subject, TrukinRanger.

Anyone who believes that their was a member of Congress after 9/11 who did not know the techniques of questioning of those low down slimy murders lives in LaLa land.

shaglorious

550 tons of yellowcake uranium was found in Iraq. I guess we all need the definition of "weapons of mass destruction". If we are going to move forward with prosecuting anyone, EVERYONE involved and EVERY congressman and congresswoman that knew about it needs to go down too. If those were the stakes and announced publically, we would all see this story vanish. Which, IMHO, is going to go away anyway.

Talkatoast

Again, why the HELL do we want to treat these monsters as human beings? I don't get your logic, people. You wanted blood after 9/11, and now suddenly you want better treatment for the terrorists than our soldiers are treated! Look at it this way: our soldiers would love to be waterboarded, but they get torture beyond your understanding when they are caught as POWs.

Talkatoast

Guess again. Waterboarding prevented over 200 attacks. REASEARCH IT! HOLY JESUS CHRIST! There were nine other interrogation techinques, all of which were mild, all of which did not work. So to say we could have used other tatics is to say that putting a child in a corner is going to fix her bad attitude. Do you want to know what other interrogation was used? One was called the facial grasp. All you did was grab the face and hold the head immobile. That's all! Did it work? Nope.

shaglorious

Talkatoast, there are quite a few people that post here that agree with you and understand that these terrorists are animals. These animals do not respond to reason. There is also some that post here that cannot seem to understand that and think that if we "waterboard" we are just like the terrorists. You cannot reason with them either.

1941

All those who want to try waterboarding, line up.If you havent had it done to you, how in the hell can you say, it is not torture? I thought the ALCU, sued to get the memos released? Why are some saying that the president did it?

patriciathomas

All that think waterboarding is torture, but don't know, line up so you can object from a point of knowledge. How the hell can you say it's torture if you haven't experienced it? Who thinks the president has the final word?

shaglorious

1941, I have not been waterboarded. I know people that have along with alot of other techniques for training. They are still here, walking around and protecting our country. Seemingly unscathed. An alternative is to TAKE NO PRISONERS.

carcraft

All those opposed to enhanced interrogation tell me what torture is? Is prolonged interrogation torture? What about 4 hours, 5 hours, may anything over 10 hours? Is being cold torture, harsh lights, standing out in the cold, listening to to Obama speak? 12 hours streight of NPR? The Rolling stones? Bush presented his line in the sand and congress didn't try to redraw it. So all you geniuses here is the situation. You have some one who masterminded the death of 3,000 people and plotting the death of thousands more, where do you draw the line? I know we well ask a few questions and let him go....

disssman

My goodness I didn't know Mary Beth was sitting in on these top secret briefings, but obviously she must have been to know soooo much about what was said and who said it. Its a pity that us regular citizens will have to wait for the declassified minutes of the meetings to see what was said. Man some people are sooo lucky to have an inside track on what is going on. Keep up the reporting Mary Beth so the rest of us are kept in the loop.

disssman

Now that I see how we obtained our information, I fully understand why this little war has dragged on for years and also why we are not one inch closer to capturing Bin Laden. I gather that most of the posters would not condemn torture by our enemies either nor their prosecution. Can't have it both ways, either it is against the law for both sides or a recognized approved procedure to be used by all armies at will. Me I would prefer it stay against the Geneva Conventions that we swore to uphold as a country.

elliottness

same old wimpy republican response that we expect from an administration whose leader was head cheerleader in school.if i go down so does everyone else.george, you must of made mammy proud! what parent wouln't want their son to be head cheerleader, instead of the athelete?who in the hell would believe anything the cia said? their motto is "lies, and deceit".bush was wrong in permitting these techniques, but the response is, "but you knew too!"will that crappy, wimpy bush crowd take responsibility for anything, or should we expect the same reaction the cheerleader gave on 911 sitting in that classroom, without a clue what to do.thank god they're gone, now start the investigations and indict as many as you can.

carcraft

disssman the terrorist do not have Geneva convenetion rights. They are not the army of a recognized Government, don't wear uniforms, and target civilians. You really need to look at the Geneva convention and who it applies to. During World War 2 any one conducting operations that was not in uniform was shot or worst and nobody was ever tried for thier execution. We did the same thing to German spies THAT HAD TURNED THEMSELVES IN.

shaglorious

disssman, The people we are at war with CUT OUR HEADS OFF! We are not fighting a civilized country. We are not even fighting a country! So, if you think waterboarding is out of the question, maybe we, in turn, should just cut their heads off. YOU cant have it both ways either.

we need to do what ever it takes to get the information we need.if it means cutting off a few heads so be it.they don't seem to have a problem doing it to our people.i'm real sick of you bed wetting liberals, its people like you that this country needs to rid of,your kind is whats tearing this country down.

elliottness on Mon Apr 27, 2009 9:18 AM I issued a challange to the anti Bush crowd. You have captured the master mine of the death 3000 Americans and the plotter of thousands of more deaths. What is torture, reading some of the drivel that passes for intelligent discussion on this web site? Hearing Nancy Pelosi's explanation of what went on during the CIA discussions? Long hours of interrogation? Then how long. What kind of discomfort are allowed? Bush talked to lawyers then presented thier conclusions to congress and NOBODY OBJECTED TO WHERE BUSH DREW THE LINE. So you geniuses step up and draw the line!! It is easy when you don't have to make the descision and can guess with 20/20 hind sight.

bdittle

In regards to torture's effectiveness (which is highly debatable), it doesn't matter because the ends will never justify the means when it comes to torture in America. Seeing as we executed Japanese for waterboarding, it is contradicting to say that it is not torture now.

willistontownsc

I don't care if it stopped 200 attacks or 200 million attacks, waterboarding is TORTURE. What part of THAT do you cons NOT understand? Terrorists may not be under the Geneva Conventions, but we signed something 21 years ago called the UN Convention Against Torture. We violated that treaty. We are supposed to be the standard bearers of humanity in the world and when we TORTURE, that is giving our enemies the license to do the same -- to our servicepeople NONETHELESS. We must call out TORTURE, no matter what!

_old_jube_early

can we waterboard willie?
