Prosecutor seeks death penalty

  • Follow Metro

Prosecutors intend to seek the death penalty against a Columbia County mother and son accused of fatally beating a Grovetown woman.

District Attorney Ashley Wright confirmed Friday that her office filed a notice of intent with Superior Court to seek the death penalty against Rebecca Sears, 41, and her 20-year-old son, Christopher Bowers. The two were indicted by a Columbia County grand jury Wednesday on murder charges in the death of 41-year-old Laverne "Kay" Parsons. They also were indicted on armed robbery and burglary charges.

"It's appropriate to file it soon after the indictment," said Mrs. Sears' lawyer, Victor Hawk, whose brother Jacque is defending Mr. Bowers.

The indictment charges Mrs. Sears, of the 200 block of Hot Springs Drive, and Mr. Bowers, of the 4000 block of Briarwood Drive, Martinez, with fatally beating Mrs. Parsons -- Mrs. Sears' next-door neighbor -- with a bat and claw hammer.

It also accuses the mother and son of stealing a gold necklace and a watch from Mrs. Parsons' home.

Assistant District Attorney Philip Catalano called Mrs. Sears the "mastermind" behind the plan during an April 16 bond hearing and said she instructed Mr. Bowers to fatally beat Mrs. Parsons with a claw hammer.

Mr. Hawk said a death penalty notice won't change his defense strategy, but it does increase the stakes.

The discovery phase of the death penalty trial likely will start after an arraignment hearing, which Rebecca Sears' attorney, Victor Hawk, expects to take place in the next two to three weeks.

These two should be

These two should be permanently removed from our society. The fifteen to twenty year delay and the seemingly endless appeals, at taxpayer expense, makes the death penalty a painful decision for the community burdened with the responsibility of dealing with it.
A live sentence is actually much less expensive, though certainly less humane.

These charges won't stick.
Unpublished

These charges won't stick. Why would a prosecutor be doing this, while risking a different sentence that may be less than death? Well, the idea is to have a national story, then get some name reconition, then possibly be elevated to: Attorney General of the state; A possible elected office; Or just get a crack at being on the bench. Now of course, everyone involved will say, "What!? Me use a public office to further personal ambitions, no way" but the hope is for just that. It has happened before and all people know the case. It is disgraceful and the plan won't work, because the defense of this case is easy, especially for the mom. Only in a minority case will a "non-shooter" be sentence to death. Everyone knows that, and these folk do not fit the mold. So again, why make the charges if they will not stick-unless something else is at work, which is exactly the case here. Again, both will not get death and appears to be a case of over-prosecution with a hidden agenda.

G-dog is right. When all the

G-dog is right. When all the facts come out of this, it is going to be a lot more than simply the murder act. Civil lawsuits, which I predict will occur, will reveal the details if they don't come out in the criminal trial.

"Only in a minority case will

"Only in a minority case will a "non-shooter" be sentence to death. " Justus, in NC a white woman was put to death because she poisoned people with arsenic. Larry Eugene Bell, who strangled that girl that he kidnapped. He was white. Junior Downs, who strangled Keenan O'Mailia. Junior was white. Once again, you made yourself look like a fool- but that's nothing new.

The items stolen, as well as

The items stolen, as well as the shooting at Sear's job, and the ransacking of the Sear's home, were just a smokescreen trying to coverup the murder. Sear's and her son did all of that to get the attention off of them but instead it backfired. When it is all revealed, the charges will stick and so will the death penalty. This has premeditated murder written all over it.

Don't worry corgimom, facts

Don't worry corgimom, facts mean absolutely ZERO to someone like justus, who simply posts his racist hate speech throws a line in there about "WE know" (as in all minorities) then runs off and never counters cold hard facts. There is no use trying to reason with these idiots. No matter what according to them, "minorities are ALWAYS being wronged"

The good news is that

The good news is that hopefully the trial will be held in Columbia County, where common sense in judicial matters is much higher than in other parts of the state. The death penalty is a good card to play because it may end up saving the state a lot of hassle if a plea is worked out. If we don't do something to speed up the implementation of the death penalty then we might as well bring back hard time. These two, if found guilty, need to suffer for every day they exist. First as punishment for the crime and as a reminder to others that society will not tolerate the behavior.

The fact that we actually

The fact that we actually have to pay for their defense appalls me as taxpayer and then have to wait for the sentence to be carried out is just as disturbing to me.

I understand every one is entitled to a fair trail but as soon as they were convicted of such a horrific crime the death penalty should have been carried out; with a baseball bat and a claw hammer.

"Once they plea-out the death penalty will get dropped."

And this is EXACTLY why plea bargains should not be a part of the process.

People who commit these sorts

People who commit these sorts of crimes should never be granted the same rights law abiding citizens are offered. Period end of story. Sadly though they actually have more rights than those who actually abide by the law. And lets say what she claims was true;you kill someone for it in such a horrific manner? How about calling the law and letting them lock her up? Had Sears actually been defending her property and family and then hit the lady a COUPLE times killing her I could possibly understand but that's just not the case here.
