One pitch after giving up a two-run homer to Ryan Braun in the fourth inning, Prince Fielder laced an infield single that hit Hamels in the front of his left shoulder.
Trainers immediately tended to Hamels, who left the game with what the team called a left shoulder contusion. He was replaced by J.A. Happ .
CUBS: After playing one game at far less than full speed, Milton Bradley is back on the bench, nursing a lingering groin injury.
"When he's 100 percent, I'll put him out there," manager Lou Piniella said Thursday, one day after Bradley played right field for the first time in more than a week. "Until then, I'll use (Reed) Johnson and (Micah) Hoffpauir in the outfield."
A career .280 hitter, Bradley is batting .043 this season. He's 1-for-23 and has struck out seven times.
METS: After being swept by the Cardinals, New York manager Jerry Manuel anticipates a front-office meeting today about the team's pitching woes. Manuel said he might add another arm, going with 13 pitchers this weekend against Washington, but would go through the rotation another time before considering any starting changes.
