Falling for the trap

  • Follow Editorials

The president asked for proof this week that his warm greeting of Venezuelan strongman Hugo Chavez has done any harm to American interests.

OK. We've got the proof right here.

The anti-American book that Chavez was seen giving to President Obama -- Open Veins of Latin America: Five Centuries of the Pillage of a Continent , by Eduardo Galeano -- skyrocketed to No. 2 on the Amazon best-seller list.

The 1971 rant, a favorite of the hemisphere's unbridled leftist-socialist America-haters, had been No. 54,295.

Only Oprah Winfrey could have done more for the book.

In effect, Mr. Obama just helped spread anti-American propaganda across Latin America. Hundreds of thousands more will read the tome because Obama gave Chavez the world stage normally reserved for the presidents of free, democratic, leading nations.

Mr. Obama and his handlers were clearly outmaneuvered and wholly unprepared for the public relations trap Chavez set at the Summit of the Americas this past week.

Had they been less guileless, the Obama team would have told the president to turn down the warmth when it comes to Chavez. And they might have been prepared with an answer to the anti-American book Chavez offered -- such as any number of scholarly books on the virtues of the American republic. There are some first- rate biographies on the Founding Fathers, books on American history, books explaining the Federalist Papers and what they mean for human freedom.

Taking note of Chavez's dismal record on free speech, Obama could have given him a framed copy of the First Amendment.

Mark Levin's new book Liberty and Tyranny is becoming a best-seller without a presidential photo-op; imagine what it would do with one.

Then again, there are loads of great books on servant leadership. What a great PR bonanza President Obama could have earned by presenting Chavez with one of those!

Instead, the Venezuelan leader outfoxed the American president -- and won a public relations bonanza for America-haters everywhere.

Candidate Obama appeared world-class naive when he said he'd meet with any world leader without precondition.

Now, President Obama seems to be oblivious to the harm he's done by doing so.

Yes let's be sure to

Yes let's be sure to apologize to all the terrorists. That really makes us look like we are the greatest country. Everyone makes mistakes but prezbho is making that part of his profession to apologize for everything and everyone, except Bush. prezbho and meshell my belle have never been proud of this country and continue to show it daily.

A key Democrat who reportedly

A key Democrat who reportedly was overheard on a National Security Agency wiretap discussing a deal with a suspected Israeli agent has called the wiretap an "abuse of power."
Rep. Jane Harman, D-California, called on the Obama administration to release transcripts of the alleged conversations to her, saying she would make them public.
CQ.com reported Harman was overheard on a National Security Agency wiretap telling a suspected Israeli agent she would lobby the Justice Department to reduce espionage-related charges against two AIPAC officials. In exchange for Harman's help, CQ.com reported, the suspected Israeli agent pledged to help lobby then-House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi to appoint Harman chair of the Intelligence Committee after the 2006 elections

'Fidel Castro says President

'Fidel Castro says President Barack Obama "misinterpreted" his brother Raul's remarks regarding the United States and bristled at the suggestion that Cuba should free political prisoners or cut taxes on remittances from abroad as a goodwill gesture to the U.S.' Just one of the times the arrogant and self-centered prezbho has had such a high opinion of himself and his visits, when talking with rogue leaders.

Forget the rhetoric! All you

Forget the rhetoric! All you have to understand is the law of the pack. By being aggressive or submissive, you are given your place in the pack. Then you must fight your way to the top if you aren't already there. Obama rolled over on his back and let them sniff him. Bad news if you are suppose to be the leader. You never show your stomach, because that is where you are most vulnerable. Do you understand the words coming from my mouth?

prezbho and company just

prezbho and company just won't let America drill for their own oil so he sucks up to terrorists. He continues to campaign for office in other countries and they continue to make fun of him. He's so self-centered and arrogant, he thinks everyone loves him while they laugh at him behind his back.

galaxygrl, are humans no more

galaxygrl, are humans no more evolved than a pack of dogs? Wow. Granted there are those terrorist groups who will never negotiate because there only goal is to destroy us, but we do not take a negotiating posture with them. However, if you think talking tough to Chevaz accomplished anything, you are mistaken. In fact it emboldened him.

The only smart way to deal

The only smart way to deal with someone like Hugo Chavez is NOT to meet with him. It gives him the power to do exactly what he did. So of course, Obama met with him. The question is why?

We need to meet with Chavez

We need to meet with Chavez and tell him how serious we are about wanting a democracy in Venezuela. Not meeting with someone just because we don't agree with their politics have NEVER solved ANY problems.

Olbermann talks to Hannity

Olbermann talks to Hannity all the time. Why shouldn't Obama talk with Chavez, Kim Jung Ill, I'm a Dinner Jacket, and others. There are people out there in the USA who don't even talk with their parents anymore. What does that solve? I'll tell you what, absolutely nothing! So if you don't talk you get zippo, and if you do talk and you get no constructive dialogue then you get zippo! Nothing gained & nothing lost. If you just stay angry and don't talk, then it's a lose - lose because nothing ever comes from not trying.

userone, you are partly correct. Banks, credit card companies, and car dealers have been ripping off people for years. But, only the stupid ones. I guess you need someone to help you make credit decisions and car buying decisions. A lot of people don't.

Some people will be ripped

Some people will be ripped off regardless of existing laws. They need a nanny government to take care of them from the cradle to the grave. They will go out of their way to elect people that will take care of them in every part of their life. The trade is security for freedom. Guess which party they congregate in. (hint: They're led by a naive person that is also easily tricked)

As has been said, several of the prezbho and crews policies haven't been initiated yet so please let us know how your credit and taxes are in the next few months. What's happening now ( with the normal corrections) is corrections of the economy as it would have happened without the trillions in vote buying paybacks.
