'Disgusting' doesn't cover it

  • Follow Editorials

"They get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy toward people who aren't like them, or anti-immigrant sentiment, or anti-trade sentiment, as a way to explain their frustrations."

-- Barack Obama, famously speaking last year about small-town Americans

Some in the "mainstream" media seem to have the same dim view of many Americans.

It's sickening, really, to see how news outlets such as CNN and MSNBC "covered" the nationwide tea parties on Wednesday. After providing precious little advance coverage -- a good way to hold down the crowds, one supposes -- they openly mocked participants, even doing so in subtly profane ways.

Amazingly, anchors such as Anderson Cooper on CNN and Rachel Maddow on MSNBC snickered about the participants at the tea parties being "teabaggers" and "teabagging" -- knowing full well that the term is slang for a disgusting sexual act. At one point, a guest on Maddow's show even explained that.

Although on separate, competing networks, they seemed to be working from the same sordid script with the same dismissive narrative. Curious.

It was disgusting and reprehensible, and a full-throttle insult of everyone who attended these protests to express legitimate concern about the direction of the country.

In one of the most unprofessional acts of "journalism" we've ever seen, CNN's Susan Roesgen "covered" a tea party by combatively peppering a young father with leading questions, arguing with him, then giving up and disparaging the entire event as "anti-CNN."

Illegal immigrants marching in U.S. streets demanding tax-paid services and citizenship from the country they entered illegally got better treatment from the media.

It appears that CNN and others were so far behind the curve on the tea party movement that they ceded coverage to Fox News Channel -- then, ironically, used the rival network's coverage as a reason not to take the events seriously.

How utterly sad -- for both the country and for any semblance of journalism left. Easily over 100,000 concerned Americans interrupted their busy lives Wednesday to commiserate over the financial future of the nation. And for their trouble, major news networks laugh, call them names and walk away.

It says much more about the news gatherers than the people they so arrogantly look down on.

When Republicans were in charge, dissent was considered the highest form of patriotism.

Now, apparently, it's just a joke.

If the numbers estimated are

If the numbers estimated are around 100,000, there should not be any disparaging of the protests. All protests start small - Look up and find out how many actually participated in the original Boston Tea Party in 1773. And since the shots at Lexington and Concord did not happen until 1775, the anti British feeling took time to reach critical mass. (And British general Howe's orders were to seize the stockpile of colonial muskets and ammunition.)

One of the problems we face today is the lack of intelligent, thoughful debate. Too many from both sides are willing to start name calling and labeling. This tell me that they can't debate intelligently.

The Tea Party which I attended had signs blaming everyone - President Obama, Barney Frank, Nancy Pelosi, the Republican Party as a whole.

If there is one thing that should unite us is a Congress and Senate whose members too often bow to special interest and only want to increase their power.

One final note - look at the evidence regarding media bias - it's there to see for everyone. Journalist should report the news and let you decide. News commentators and editorial writers are there to give their opinions.

RCR, you've been seriously

RCR, you've been seriously misinformed and tricked and you know your place. That's fine with me. You like the direction this country is going? Really? There's enough socialist countries and anyone that wants to change America into one might as well plan on a hard fight. You don't like capitalism? You only refer to the worst traits of perverted capitalism, not all of the ones that have made this country great and allowed you to make a good income. Do you hate those traits too? Your Marxist messiah does. He's said so many times. You write as though you're being tricked again. I guess you DO know your place.

TechLover, Obama doubled all

TechLover, Obama doubled all of Bush's 8 year debt, and the accumulated debt inherited by Bush, in his first 60 days. Cultural shock perpetuated by the actions of the Marxist messiah precipitated the TEA (taxed enough already) parties. The $3 trillion in instant debt will have to be paid back by a country that is three time as far in debt as it was when O took over. TEA parties are just the start. The next 3.5 years will have many more protests. You'll have to read about them on the ACES because your news source won't notice them. The next surprise will be in 2010 and then the big one in 2012.

What is sickening is this

What is sickening is this newspaper's editorial board, with their excusing of the blatant racism that came from those TEA parties on Wednesday. If you haven't seen the video I am referring to, just type in Pensacola TEA party on Youtube or on Google video. And Ms. Roesgen did about as professional of a job of ANY journalist on ANY of the networks that day. That anti-American scum she had to put up with calling Obama a "fascist" really made my blood boil. This editorial board and each and every moron that supports it have NO sense of the history of this country and have tried to make all of us ignorant scum like them. Remember this McCarthyist editorial board wanted to try anti-war protesters for treason. This McCarthyist editorial board, located at 725 Broad Street in Augusta. You all at the Augusta Chronicle have made it know that ignorance, not education, is your forte. People like Michael Ryan is why this nation is where it is. Hope you anti-American conservative scum is proud of it.

Come on people ignore the

Come on people ignore the fact that our president is now saddling up to a dictator and the biggest drug lord in ages. He has to play nice to his friends so he and his cronies can live the high life after he bankrupts our country. May be he get his new friend to cough up some of that drug money to help with his absurd bailout schemes. What has Barry done in the past 90 days besides make the US appear weak and sissified; besides degradating the USA at every opprtunity????

Hey PT, while you're at it, I didn't see your response to my post discovering that the research used by "un"Fairtax.org where they say prices will fall actually says that they will be able to fall because people would only receive their current after tax income and not 100% of their paycheck as claimed by the unFair Tax folks.

TechLover, what? You change

TechLover, what? You change sources as quickly as a gnat changes eyes. You reference as many "experts" as post anywhere. My point that you, in typical liberal manner, seem to enjoy being confused about , is that Bush did allow a lot of unnecessary domestic spending in his 8 years and it was not good for the country. Obama has spent twice what Bush spent and he's only been in office for less that 90 days. verstehen sie

In response to your misunderstanding about the Fair Tax, TechLover, I don't know what to say. The book is perfectly clear and the second book refutes all of the silliness the government could come up with. If you're still confused, as you insist on claiming, you'll just have to remain a Dem. There's apparently no hope for you.

PT:You seem confused. Is it

PT:You seem confused. Is it 60 days or 90 days. Did he double W's debt or spending? W's total budgets equaled $20.37 trillion for his 8 years. Now are you saying Obama spent $40.74 trillion in 60 days(or is it 90 days)? Sounds like you're repeating what one of your right wing radioheads said and don't have a clue what you're talking about. Use that nongovernment school education and do some research. What are the sources for your figures? Mine where CBO, Treasurydirect.gov, gpoaccess.gov, and useconomy.about. It seems the unfair tax folks are just as confused as you. They continue to cite the study by Dr Dale Jorgenson as proof that prices will decrease. Might I suggest:www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/1470200/posts Dr Jorgenson plainly states his study said prices could drop 20% because businesses would only continue to pay current after tax pay. Again, try some research and don't believe everything in your little unFair Tax books is the supreme inerrant word of God. Right wing radio hosts and politicians have been known to lie. If you're still confused, you'll just have to remain a Repub.

I thought Jamie Foxx's

I thought Jamie Foxx's comments were hysterical. And pretty true, considering that she's shacking with her boyfriend- you know, with her being 16, him being 21. How cozy. The one that her parents, Tish and Billy Ray Cyrus, allowed her to bring on tour with her, you know? She runs that family now, and she knows it. She has earned more money this year than Billy Ray and Tish have probably made all of their lives. I have no respect for her or her parents.

TechLover, Obama has been in office less that 90 days, but he has spent more in the first 60 days than Bush did in 8 years. I know you understand since I've explained this several times today. You and your party enjoys being the author of confusion and it works on your choir. Conservatives can still see and hear what you are. Hopefully you'll mature beyond your foolishness.

I wasn't at a Tea Party but

I wasn't at a Tea Party but you had better believe I support the cause to cut unnecessary spending and cut taxes. Just because a small portion of the public turned out for these rallies doesn't mean the movement isn't real. All movements start out small and are viewed by the mainstream to be just a fringe element of extremeists. --------------- Since there are so many racially charged people on here who think race dictates everything in the world let me provide you with an example. The same thing could have been said about the civil liberties movement decades ago. It started with some extremeists who didn't like the status quo, a lady who made a ruckus of where she sat on a bus, or a kid who didn't like the kind of water fountain he had to drink from or the school he attended. The protests at universities in the 1960s and the violence at SC State was all caused by a very small minority of extremeists who were anti-American and unpatriotic. Yes?

RCR says: Helen Blocker, is a Tom who can't get elected. She's political roadkill. No, RCR, it is obvious that the reason that Helen Blocker Adams doesn't get elected are people like you, who think just because she can think for herself and see past the color of people's skin, she is a "Tom" as you say. People like you say the same thing about Grady Abrams. I may not agree with everything Grady Abrams writes, but I definitely disagree with anyone calling him a "Tom". You know who you are. RCR, I sure wouldn't want to pick up the pieces if you ever called her that to her face, and she wouldn't even have to lift a finger nor say a word, although as quick-witted as she is, she is capable of a tongue-lashing you wouldn't forget. Too her credit, I don't think she'd bother wasting her time doing that.
