'Disgusting' doesn't cover it

  • Follow Editorials

"They get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy toward people who aren't like them, or anti-immigrant sentiment, or anti-trade sentiment, as a way to explain their frustrations."

-- Barack Obama, famously speaking last year about small-town Americans

Some in the "mainstream" media seem to have the same dim view of many Americans.

It's sickening, really, to see how news outlets such as CNN and MSNBC "covered" the nationwide tea parties on Wednesday. After providing precious little advance coverage -- a good way to hold down the crowds, one supposes -- they openly mocked participants, even doing so in subtly profane ways.

Amazingly, anchors such as Anderson Cooper on CNN and Rachel Maddow on MSNBC snickered about the participants at the tea parties being "teabaggers" and "teabagging" -- knowing full well that the term is slang for a disgusting sexual act. At one point, a guest on Maddow's show even explained that.

Although on separate, competing networks, they seemed to be working from the same sordid script with the same dismissive narrative. Curious.

It was disgusting and reprehensible, and a full-throttle insult of everyone who attended these protests to express legitimate concern about the direction of the country.

In one of the most unprofessional acts of "journalism" we've ever seen, CNN's Susan Roesgen "covered" a tea party by combatively peppering a young father with leading questions, arguing with him, then giving up and disparaging the entire event as "anti-CNN."

Illegal immigrants marching in U.S. streets demanding tax-paid services and citizenship from the country they entered illegally got better treatment from the media.

It appears that CNN and others were so far behind the curve on the tea party movement that they ceded coverage to Fox News Channel -- then, ironically, used the rival network's coverage as a reason not to take the events seriously.

How utterly sad -- for both the country and for any semblance of journalism left. Easily over 100,000 concerned Americans interrupted their busy lives Wednesday to commiserate over the financial future of the nation. And for their trouble, major news networks laugh, call them names and walk away.

It says much more about the news gatherers than the people they so arrogantly look down on.

When Republicans were in charge, dissent was considered the highest form of patriotism.

Now, apparently, it's just a joke.

Hey elitist liberal, what

Hey elitist liberal, what Bush was doing was trying to PROTECT America and Americans FROM another terrorist attack on US soil, which he did. What Obama is trying to do is DESTROY America from within. He and his cabinet have thumbed their noses at the Constitution on a daily basis. Obama claims to have "taught" the Constitution for ten years. What maybe he was doing was studying it to look for weaknesses to bring it down. Our founding fathers were guided in their writing of this great document by a much higher power, one that liberals don't understand and hate.

As for the idiotic comment by palomino9, we had a booming economy for six years, up until Pelosi and Reid came along and DESTROYED it. The Democrats have NEVER rebuilt our economy, not once. Carter destroyed it in four years and it took Reagan just a short time to turn it around. Obama is doing far worse long-term damage in just two months. This time it will be CONSERVATIVES, not Republicans OR Democrats that turn it around, but CONSERVATIVES from both parties. The REVOLUTION has begun. 2010 and 2012 will bring drastic changes to America....For the GOOD of us all.

Well, justus4, you lost me at

Well, justus4, you lost me at "Teabaggers hate the guy in the White House." Maybe some do, there will always be haters, but MOST don't. For instance, we have people at the tea parties that VOTED FOR Obama. You're telling us that they hate Obama? Since your first line is a lie, there was no point in reading the rest. It would make no sense, just like Eugene Robinson's attempt to belittle the Tea Party and pigeonhole them as Republicans only. You wish.

Baroness, good point. Many of

Baroness, good point. Many of the teabaggers are Democrats. The vast majority of the people in this country who are working and saving money are upset with these giveaways. As far as Fox, it is obvious that their ratings step all over the other cable news networks. Fox also attracts quality advertisers because of the demographics of their audience. Republicans have money. Deal with it.

Riverman1, She isn't turning

Riverman1, She isn't turning into a leading voice, she has been one for many years. I admire her energy and enthusiasm, I just wish she had a volume control and that she would listen to people that are trying to tell her we have a crime problem here. She could do something about it. She's got the skills and the contacts. But I observed her listening to someone concerned about crime in South Augusta, and she was dismissive, a few minutes later announcing to the people at this earlier event, "I'm not listening to anything negative about South Augusta." I noticed a similar conversation on another occasion. Until she pulls her head out of the sand and recognizes there is a problem, how can she use those leadership skills to do anything about it? If she has now recognized it, great, but if so, it's a recent development. This community is losing many people from young to old to drugs, gangs and other criminal activities. Ignoring is not going to help matters.

I think its funny someone would say they turn to Fox for information. I do find MSNBC to be to the extreme left, but I also find Fox to be to the extreme right. I think CNN is closer to the middle than either.

MSNBC continues to enlighten

MSNBC continues to enlighten it's viewers by saying that Obama has already given 95% of the middle class a lower tax rate. (&NOTE..past tense.) Now if any person reading this is part of that 95% that is already paying less taxes I would love to hear about it.

This protest was about the

This protest was about the last 8 plus year of fiscal irresponsibility of the government and the its currrent proposals to spend even more going forward. It has nothing to do that the president was born of a white woman but has darker skin so all of you liberal racists can stop the rhetoric and go back to wanting the government to take care of you because you are too lazy or ignorant to take care of yourself. Alas 95% of Americans are not getting tax cuts. You only need to look at your property tax bill in relation to you property value, sales taxes like the SPLOST proposal to tax the public to build a baseball stadium for a very few interested people, your phone bill with the ever increasing FCC taxes and surcharges, the cap and trade tax proposal which will increase your electric bill and every good made in the USA that requires any energy, and your income taxes 2 years from now when tax cuts are allowed to expire. Yes America your taxes are increasing.

AC, the event was much ado

AC, the event was much ado about the nothing unless you are an extreme white right-winger. I saw nary a black or brown face in the modest crowd, save for the clean-up crew.. AC, you do it everyday. Your views are well known by the people in the area you serve, yet you only pander to extremist thought. The same people that showed up at the tea parties are the same that show up to hear the dingbat from Alaska. There is no growing movement here, just one that has always existed and is decreasing as time goes on. Your hysterical shriekings are in lock step with Fox, and most of the country knows to ignore them as well. Fox has the highest rankings on CABLE because it is the only network that panders to right-wing extremism. Its viewers tune in for their daily dose of half-truths and outright lies because it makes them feel better about themselves. Taken in context with the rest of the population, this is no surprise nor reason to crow about as an accomplishment. The American public spoke loudly back in November, finally able to see through the lies of the Republicans. The tea parties are merely the losers from the election, and are a shrinking base at best.

It says much about how many

It says much about how many attended the tax protests because there were millions more that didn't attend. Ignore, evade and avoid all you want. prezbho and this administration say they are spending us into prosperity. How often has it worked for you to spend more than you make and how rich were you after you spent all that money? How many of your creditors kept telling you to just keep borrowing and spending and don't worry about the payments? I don't know about you libs but it's never worked out for me and probably hasn't for most intelligent people. So just keep drinking the kool-aid and watching the liberal media because they will surely tell you what you want to hear.

I guess I must be one of

I guess I must be one of angry old white men who hates Obama. But it's not because he is black. I actually had great hopes for this young man. But unfortunately the pre-election hype from the right wing of the Republican party and FOX turned out to be true. In only 90 days Obama has proven himself to be anti-America, a marxist/socialist and possibly communist, and a radical left winger who bows to muslim princes, and daps with Hugo Chavez. All of his appointments are radical left wingers too. Not a middle of the roader in the bunch. I have now passed the "disappointed" stage and am squarely in the "scared for my country and our way of life" stage. About the time I was thinking that I should become politically active and join the protests, the Dept of Homeland Security declared me a potential terrorist because I am a combat vet. Be afraid people. Be very afraid of this administration from top to bottom including the Democrat congressmen and senators. They apparently think they see the opportunity to turn this country into a socialized welfare third world country in one fell swoop. Wake up a look at their policies people. They want total control of everything, especially our money.

Get someone to read the Manifesto to you and explain what it says. You'll recognize many of Obama's traits and actions. Denying he's a Marxist doesn't change who he is.
