Tips for last-minute tax filers

TODAY is THE DEADLINE

The deadline to file 2008 tax returns is 11:59 p.m. today. H&R Block is scheduled to close at 9 p.m., but all offices will stay open until the last client is served, said district manager Steve Harvey. He recommends filers make an appointment and bring all tax-related paperwork.

NEED AN EXTENSION?

H&R Block can help you file for a six-month extension. This is an extension to file, not an extension to pay. If you miss the deadline and owe money, the IRS will assess interest for late payment and possibly a penalty, depending on the amount you owe. The IRS can also assess a penalty for failure to file, Mr. Harvey said.

If you don't pre-pay your taxes when you file an extension, you will be charged interest from April 15 and a late penalty fee.

TURBOTAX OPTION

Intuit's TurboTax had about 20 million customers file their own taxes last year, said Colleen Gatlin, a TurboTax spokeswoman.

With TurboTax Deluxe, you can prepare your federal and state return and e-file your federal return for $59.95. E-filing your state tax return costs an additional $19.95.

TurboTax Deluxe Online costs $49.95 and includes one federal e-file. To prepare and e-file a state return, you'll pay an additional $39.95.

POST OFFICE HOURS

There are no extended hours for the U.S. Postal Service. All retail lobbies will have regular hours today. Only mail deposited before midnight in collection boxes at the main branch in downtown Augusta at 525 Eighth St. will be collected and postmarked April 15.
