Birth order has an impact

Birth order can affect your personality and the way you interact with your siblings.

Being the oldest child in his family, Michael Ridlehoover, a senior at Evans High, said he tries to guard his younger sister from situations that could end up being harmful.

"If I see someone or a situation that can potentially harm her, I will advise her about it and do my best to protect her from it," he said.

He can also give her advice on previous activities he's been involved with.

"I love being the oldest. I love the sense of responsibility that comes with that position and it has shaped who I am today," he said.

Ashyr Kleist, a sophomore at Evans High, thinks being the youngest is better.

"You watch your older siblings mess up and get in trouble, so you know what not to do," she said.

Being the youngest can be harder if an older sibling is popular or smart. Teachers usually expect you to make the same good grades they did, or when people hear your name, they ask whether you're that person's younger sibling.

There's an assumption that youngest siblings get the most attention.

"When I was younger, I did, but now I get the same as any person would," Ashyr said.

Jena Berkhimer is a sophomore at Evans High School.
