Man is hit by vehicle, dies

An Augusta man died after being struck by a vehicle Thursday night.

William Jacobs, 64, of Belair Road, died at Doctors Hospital about 9:30 p.m., said Columbia County Deputy Coroner Harriett Garrison. The cause of death appears to be blunt force trauma, but an autopsy will be conducted Friday at the Augusta Crime Lab, she said.

Mr. Jacobs and his wife were visiting friends on Roswell Drive in Martinez when he was struck.

The Columbia County Sheriff's Office is investigating the collision. Charges could be brought against the driver, the deputy coroner said.

Stimulus money will go toward road resurfacing

Nearly $6.2 million in economic stimulus money will be used to resurface parts of Deans Bridge and Sand Bar Ferry roads, according to a news release from Gov. Sonny Perdue.

The governor submitted paperwork to the federal Transportation Department to have 67 road projects across the state paid for with $208 million from the funds . That is about a quarter of the total stimulus money that will come to Georgia for transportation, the news release said. T wo of the projects are in Augusta - $2.8 million for Sand Bar Ferry Road from East Boundary to the Savannah River bridge and $3.3 million for Deans Bridge Road from Sandy Run Creek to a half-mile south of Tobacco Road.

Coliseum Authority member Usry resigns

Another Augusta-Richmond County Coliseum Authority member has called it quits. Jack Usry, a legislative delegation appointee, submitted a resignation letter last week, Rep. Quincy Murphy, the delegation chairman, confirmed.

That brings the 12-member board down to nine people. Donnie Thompson, appointed by Augusta Commissioner Joe Jackson, has also resigned, and the legislative delegation never replaced Adrian Arnold when she resigned last year.

Under a bill awaiting the governor's signature, the current board has seven weeks left before its demise. Complaints that the board had become ineffective and embarrassingly quarrelsome prompted lawmakers to reduce it to seven members -- six appointed by commissioners and a chairman appointed by legislators. Current members would have to sit out a year before they could be reappointed.

ARC competes in state math, science contest

The Academy of Richmond County has advanced and will be one of only six Georgia schools competing in the 2009 Junior Engineering Technical Society's TEAMS competition.

The Test of Engineering, Aptitude, Mathematics and Science competition has a section with 80 multiple choice questions and one with open-ended questions. This year's theme is "Behind the Scenes: Theme Parks."

The purpose of the program is to inspire interest in math, science and engineering and to show the practical application of these fields.

The other Georgia schools competing nationally are Grayson High School, Chamblee High School, Northside High School, Frederick Douglass High School and Columbus High School.

Cool Beans on the ARC competition. I guess it goes to show you that the morons turned out by the school don't have to be morons unless the just don't want to be seen as "ackin white".

I live off Roswell Dr and had no idea of the accident. This is a residential neighborhood. Speeders speed over the speed humps. With it being Masters week we have seen an increase in cut through traffic. If you use this neighborhood as a cut through please respect the residents and SLOW down. There are young kids that play on my street. My heart goes out to the Jacobs family.

Little Lamb

I looked at the map of Roswell Dr. and it does not appear to be a "cut-through." It is a typical suburban residential street, and it ends in a cul-de-sac. The only people using Roswell Dr. would be people traveling to or from a home in the subdivision.

MrSold

Actually Little Lamb it is often used as a cut through road between Columbia Road and Owens Road. Maybe you should have read the comment from the woman who actually lives on the street........and my condolences to the Jacobs family as well....

Little Lamb Roswell Dr Links Columbia and Owens Rd. It is a cut through.

Little Lamb

OK, I looked at the map again and I see it. But, as usual, Little Lamb has a solution. The residents can petition the county to cut Roswell Dr. right where Ashbyrne runs into it, there at the pond. The neighbors and the county can pitch in and buy out the homeowner at 4331 Roswell and make a park there. There will be no more "cutting through" on Roswell Dr.!

Roswell Drive did end at Moorehead and Roswell and then some brilliant individual decided to open that road to the other subdivision. This became a racetrack and recently added the speedbumps.

Little Lamb

The death on Roswell Dr. occurred at 9:30 p.m. on Thursday and the story is in the Friday morning paper, so I salute the Chronicle for fast reporting. There are still many things unreported here, and I'm sure more details will be forthcoming - - such as, was Mr. Jacobs walking along Roswell Dr.? Was he standing in the yard talking to his friends? Was he in his vehicle (first they use the term "struck" and later the term "collision," so it's not clear whether Jacobs was in a vehicle)? Was the motorist who struck Mr. Jacobs a resident of the subdivision or was he someone "cutting through?"

Little Lamb

Hey, Converted: I bet I know who was the "brilliant individual" who authorized opening up the Roswell Dr. cut-through. It sounds like something Pam Tucker would want so the emergency vehicles could cut through and save time in fires, floods and other emergencies. What do you think?

convertedsoutherner

No, that connector to Owens Rd was done years ago when they wrongly decided to connect the two subdivisions. Think they even tried to put apts on 7 acres in that next subdivision which would have added additional traffic in that area. From what I've heard, the residents strongly fought that idea and no apartments will be put in that single dwelling enclosed area..

Any surprise that the "Obama Stimulus" money will go to resurface Deans Bridge Road and Sand Bar Ferry Road?

And to "ImThatGuy", Obama is NOT black. He is bi-racial. And more important than color, he is a SOCIALIST. I couldn't give a flip what color our President is as long as he is wanting the best for AMERICA, not just a few elitists who want to control EVERY aspect of our lives.

LadyCisback, you are an idiot. Maybe if YOU put in the 12 years of school and expense to become a Doctor, then you would feel entitled to drive around in whatever car you want. As for YOUR envy of Doctors, do you say anything about what Ludicris or 50 Cent or LeBron James drives? What was the last movie you saw? Do you say anything about Brad Pitt or Denzel for what THEY drive?
Stop griping about others and worry about yourself. As for the others without insurance, how many of them have a boat or a motorcycle sitting in the garage? How many have full cable and other luxuries but NO insurance? How many smoke or drink a six pack every night but say they can't afford insurance? I'm sick of this entitlement mentality in this country. I work for what I have and I pay my own insurance. I don't have a play car or motorcycle because I am an ADULT and I take care of my responsibilities BEFORE I indulge in my wants. Wahhhh, wahhhh, wahhhhhh go the liberals who want every thing handed to them.
