"Her death spurred me to get involved and raise money to help fund research and other programs the Cancer Society offers cancer patients," he said. "After she died, I really wanted to get involved and do something to help."

Mr. Morris, a National Rifle Association certified shooting instructor, created Shoot Down Cancer, a benefit to raise money for the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life. The benefit will be held April 28 and May 7. This is its second year.

While promoting the event in the community, Mr. Morris learned that many others had stories similar to his.

"I found that other people have had family or friends who have had cancer and many of them didn't survive, either," he said. "Their stories really drove home that we have to do as much as we can to find a cure.

''I believe that the answer will come through research, and that has motivated me even more to raise as much as I can."

Last year, Mr. Morris raised $6,019 through the benefit. His goal this year is to raise $12,000.

Participants are asked to get sponsors to raise money for the cause. Participants then bring their contributions to Shooters Indoor Range on Patriots Way on April 28 or May 7 and turn them in to Mr. Morris.

Those who have raised at least $50 will get the use of a shooting lane for free. The target and eye and ear protection will also be free.

People who are using their own guns and ammo must bring the weapons unloaded. Rifles must be .308 caliber or smaller, but all handgun calibers are allowed. Guns will be available for rent and ammo may be purchased at Shooters.

Gun-safety instruction will also be offered.

Those not participating in either shooting or safety instruction can simply turn in their donations, Mr. Morris said.

Regardless of how people choose to participate, he hopes they join him in the fundraising effort.

"I definitely would encourage everyone to take part in this in some way," he said. "Together, we can help make a difference."
