Passover begins today, includes rare ceremony
Passover begins at sundown tonight, the start of an eight-day Jewish festival commemorating the exodus of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt.
This year, Passover includes Birkat Hachama, or the Blessing of the Sun, which comes every 28 years. Local synagogues will remember the Passover with ceremonial dinners called Seders.
Chabad of Augusta will hold its Seder at 8 p.m. after a Blessing of the Sun service at 7:30 p.m. Both will be held at the Chabad House, 3924 Old Furys Ferry Road. Call (706) 722-7659.
Congregation Children of Israel's community Seder on Thursday night is sold out. Its Passover service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the temple, 3005 Walton Way. Call (706) 736-3140.
SRS submits proposal for landfill expansion
A request from Savannah River Site for a Class Two landfill expansion has been received by the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control, according to a news release Tuesday.
The proposal is consistent with local zoning, and the landfill area is not within 1,000 feet of any home, day care center, church, school, hospital or public park, the release said.
The public can review the request at the Environmental Quality Control Region 5 Aiken Office, 206 Beaufort St. N.E. Written comments can be mailed to John Schnabel, BLWM, SC DHEC, 2600 Bull St., Columbia, SC 29201. All comments must be received by 5 p.m. May 1.
State gets $8.9 million grant for education
Georgia has been awarded an $8.9 million federal grant to improve its educational data system, the state Department of Education announced Tuesday.
Georgia was one of 27 states that received a 2009 Statewide Longitudinal Data System Grant from the Institute of Educational Sciences, a division of the U.S. Department of Education.

The lottery is called the South Carolina Education Lottery, so I say if we are trying to use bailout money for education that is supposedly a state function, we need to shutdown the lottery and let those that waste their money pay more taxes that would go toward education. Since the lottery has millions in the bank of the people that have gambled, why not use that to help the problem. If we get bailout money, we have to repay, so help us out lottery.

In TN voters approved having a lottery with proceeds going to fund college scholarships for qualified individuals. Having a large fund of money moves politicians and others to tears because they can't get their hands in it to fund their favorite projects that are not college scholarships. Before you cry yourseld to sleep because lottery funds are not being used to solve every problem maybe you should look at the legislation that created the lottery.
