WILLISTON, S.C. - A memorial service for Harry Johannes Albert Behrens, 71, of rural Mauston, Wisconsin will be held three p.m. Tuesday, April 7th, 2009 at The Williston Cemetery, Williston, SC. Harry died March 26, 2009 at Hess Memorial Hospital in Mauston, WI. A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, April 4, 2009 at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church near Castle Rock Lake of rural Mauston, WI with Father John Paul Lobo celebrating. Born April 23, 1937 in Lueneburg, Germany, Harry was a son of the late Karl and Katharina (Bunz) Behrens. He received his Bachelors degree in welding engineering with a minor in metallurgy and a Masters degree in foundry technology from Giessen-Friedberg University. As a young man he helped individuals travel from East Berlin to West Berlin. He immigrated to the United States on October 27, 1967 to work for Meehanite Corporation. He married Virginia Simmons, daughter of Leo and Iris Simmons, on January 27, 1973 and was married to her for 28 years until her death from cancer in 2002; Harry will be buried beside his wife at The Williston Cemetery. He worked in metallurgy while living in Charlotte, NC, Williston, SC, Orbisonia, PA, Rock Hill, SC and Birmingham, AL. He then worked for the Georgia Ironworks in Thomson, GA and later returned to Meehanite and worked for them in Ohio and Wisconsin. Harry celebrated each day with his love of pastries and cheeses at a four o'clock coffee hour. He was a master at remodeling each home in which he and his family lived. His love of gardening was exhibited by the display of flowers and shrubs in every home he inhabited. And, whenever he had the chance, he watched his favorite sport, soccer. He was an individual who never met a stranger, with his outgoing personality and personable knack to start a conversation. Survivors include his companion of the past several years, Rosetta Boyle; three children, Katharina and Karl both of Milwaukee and Harry, Jr. (Shelly) of Macon, GA; sisters, Eva (Heinze) Kohlenbecker and Eirka Kupfer; brothers, Karl (Gabrielle) and Herrmann (Sabine) and many nieces and nephews, living in Germany and the US.
