CSRA has many wonderful role models

You don't have to look very far to find heroes and role models. They are all around us. God has given us heroes that we can look up to, take pride in, and emulate if only we will open our eyes and ears.

The first one that comes to mind is Lou Brissie, the North Augusta resident who survived a leg injury in World War II to become a major-league baseball pitcher. What an incredible man who gave everything for a cause that will endure forever. ... There are many others like Mr. Brissie. I thank him from the bottom of my heart. Perhaps, we should name roads, parks, and other public areas after people such as Mr. Brissie instead of politicians.

Another hero in our area is a young man all of us can look up to: Augusta State University basketball player Garret Siler. Mr. Siler has overcome some obstacles and led a life that all of our young people should emulate. Mr. Siler has taken his talents and combined them with hard work and one of the best attitudes I have ever witnessed in preparing his life for the future. He has done this with a class and dignity that all our young people could and should notice.

Garret has set an example for all of Augusta and the CSRA. Garret's parents deserve credit also. I know them personally, and there are no finer parents in the CSRA. His parents did not push him to be a basketball player, but they did push him to be the best at whatever he chose to do. The talented Garret plays the piano and guitar, and sings.

You want someone to look up to? Look no farther than Garret Siler. I thank him for being a great example right here in Augusta.

Look around the CSRA -- good examples of humanity are all over our area. Let all of us try and follow these examples.

Mr. Brantley alludes a critical issue: Why does our media pay so much more attention to anti-heroes like Brittany and her "cool parents" than it does to heroes like Mr. Brissie, Mr. Siler and Siler's parents?

I , too, would like to see more attention paid to the accomplishments of Augusta success stories. However, since these type stories don't attract the controversial commentary of the "south Augusta heros", they don't seem to get the press exposure. It's all about the money.
