Restaurant owner recognized by club as woman of year

Angelina Townes, the owner of a McDonald's in Evans, was recognized Saturday as Woman of the Year during the third annual Shero Awards ceremony.

In addition to being a business owner, Mrs. Townes helps organize the Ronald McDonald House Scholarship program for students. She formerly served as a member of the Columbia County Chamber of Commerce and works to improve the quality of life in the Augusta area.

Her generosity was one of the reasons Mrs. Townes was chosen woman of the year, said Monic Davis, a member of the selection committee.

"I could tell from reading her bio how dedicated she was, not just to her business but to her family and the community as well," Ms. Davis said. "She's a wife, a mother, a business owner and a community activist. She has so many roles, but none of them are ever neglected. She fulfills each role to the best of her ability."

Mrs. Townes said she enjoys reaching out to her community.

"I've always been one who liked to help others," she said. "It's not about the recognition. It's just a natural thing for me to see if there's a need and try to help out in some way."

Mrs. Townes was one of several area women recognized during the ceremony at Paine College held by the Sisters Only Club.

Other honorees were: Vision Award -- Monique Braswell, activist and co-host on radio station WNRR; Arts & Media Award -- Judith Simon-Butler, the director and drama instructor for the Augusta Mini Theatre Inc.; Faith & Spirituality Award -- Angela Gaston, the retirement services officer at Fort Gordon; Health & Social Services Award -- Betty Harris, the owner and administrator of Tender Care Training Center; Law & Government Award -- Judy Heath, a community volunteer and advocate; Youth Advocate Award -- Larissa Jones, a youth mentor; Business Award -- Shannon Mapp, the owner and operator of Blessed Day Care; and Community Service Award -- LaTonya Walton, the president of Positive Women Taking Action.

The event was held by Pendleton & Goudy Tax Service; Nicholson Revell LLP, Attorneys at Law; and radio station WKSP-FM (96.3 ).

Cool.

FallingLeaves

Define "Sisters" as in "Sisters Only Club" please.

FallingLeaves

Oh, never mind, I just looked at nearly 150 pictures from the event. Sisters in this context must mean black females, because that is all that I saw in the photos. Is this another "blacks only" organization?

Which leads me to this: Since this is another "blacks only" organization at a historically black college and the "woman of the year" mentioned above is also black, wouldn't it be more correct and less deceptive to headline it: "Restaurant owner recognized by club as black woman of year"? There was room for the appropriate adjective in the headline. If that adjective is not appropriate, maybe we should reconsider whether organizations like this are not appropriate. They seem designed to encourage divisiveness to me.
