WAYNESBORO, Ga. --- Christine Long, whose 11 children were found living in a rundown house without utilities or food, tried to get two of the older children to change their statements to prosecutors, a guardian for the children testified Tuesday.
"I know what you did last week. I'm very disappointed in you," Mrs. Long reportedly told two of the children who spoke with prosecutors the week before their March 24 supervised visitation with their mother.
Over the objections of Mrs. Long's attorneys Tuesday, Judge David Roper called Nancy Minyard, one of the children's two guardians, to testify about what she learned from Mrs. Long's 16-year-old daughter and 13-year-old son.
The teens told Mrs. Minyard that in addition to expressing her disappointment, Mrs. Long said she knew they gave a different account of their lives than she had. If the stories didn't match, they weren't going to come home, the children quoted Mrs. Long as saying.
Mrs. Long and her husband, Jeremy, are charged with 10 counts of cruelty to children and five counts of failure to educate.
On July 31, law enforcement found Mrs. Long, an 18-year-old daughter and the 10 underage children living in a rural house without running water or electricity.
According to court documents filed by the district attorney, there was no food or beds for the children; two of them had never worn shoes; and none had been vaccinated, given dental care or sent to school. The younger children suffered from malnutrition.
At an emergency hearing last week, Judge Roper blocked an attempt by the Department of Family and Children Services to return the four oldest children to Mrs. Long on a trial basis. The district attorney sought the ruling in part because she feared Mrs. Long could influence the children's testimony.
In their divorce pleadings, Mr. and Mrs. Long blame each other for the alleged neglect of their children.
On Tuesday, Judge Roper said it's apparent his ruling was valid. From now on, he said, any visitation between the Longs and their children must be supervised by one of the guardians appointed for the children, not DFCS.
The children said that at some point during last week's visitation the DFCS worker left the room, Mrs. Minyard testified.
The teenage daughter also reported that Sheriff Greg Coursey was at the visitation and asked her about her foster family's home.
After Tuesday's hearing, Sheriff Coursey said he didn't hear Mrs. Long make any statements to the children about the criminal case. He arrived late and left the room briefly to take a phone call, he said.
The sheriff has attended four visitations Mrs. Long has had with her children and attended a Christmas event at the First Baptist Church in Waynesboro with the children and their mother, he said.
Mrs. Long has supporters in the church, but Sheriff Coursey said he hasn't taken a position in the criminal case, which is now being handled by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
"I was there the first day, when we found the children, and I guess you could say I took a liking to the children ... got personally involved with the kids," Sheriff Coursey said.
He attended last week's visitation because there was a celebration of the 11-year-old's birthday. "He wants to be sheriff one day."

Prime example of why there should be supervised visits. This means "eyes on",by some one all the time. More mental damage was done to these children with just a few words,"I and disappointed". Not enough "atta boys" to fix this one. Judge Roper, can take a pat on the back for this one. He knows now,DFACS is going to be his problem also.Maybe with his insight and first hand knowledge, he can help fix a lot of problems ,with this system(DFACS)
Judge Roper is awesome judge. He assisted me in getting child support for first time ever and toss the dad in jail after 7 years of pursuing child support. He looked out for my child. He will look out for these children also. I am in full support for him.
This is an unusual case in that the people are white.
I wonder if additional charges will be filed against Mrs. Long? I thought it was illegal to attempt to influence witness testimony. pofwe, your statement is absurd, you obviously have never visited Appalachia.
She doesnt need her kids back. She could have left that house at any time. Whose to say she didnt come and go also. All those kids may not even have the same father. They should test them. What kind of mother would let her children go with out food?
Not that unusual pofwe, just go volunteer at a school near you, bad parents come in all colors, and social classes.
pofwe I can assure you that not many black people, even those on welfare live in that kind of filth. And our kids are going to school even if it's just to get them out of the house. So your statement lacks merit, but really cute. Study the bulk of these cases and you would be shocked if any ever turn out to be black people.
Thank you Sandy Hudson for once again being one of the best investigative reporters the AC has. This story is not surprising as I am sure DFCS is working hard to make sure everyone's stories match to cover their screw ups. I only hope these children will be given a chance with a good home that is not with their parents. If the mother had any merit playing the victim in this case she has lost it with her behavior reported in this article. And by the way, why did the DFCS worker leave the room during a supervised visitation? The whole idea behind a supervised visitation is to monitor the inner actions and report to the courts....oh wait, unless you have made prior arrangements with the mother to walk out so that she can prep the kids....Yep, gotta make sure your stories match now.....
This isn't a white or black issue. This is a right and wrong issue. Both parents were wrong. They can blame each other all they want but they both know they were wrong. Those children should not have to suffer because their parents are ignorant, but they wil suffer for it for the rest of their lives. And the really sad thing is that the people who are supposed to help remedy the situation are, once again, not doing their jobs they way they should. Thank God the Sheriff at least has heart enough to care and try to help the children.
Maybe the social worker had to go to the bathroom. Sometimes it is hard to put off these bodily functions. I also agree this is not a color issue, bad people come in all colors, shapes and sizes. Hopefully the children will be taken good care of by foster parents. This is really a sad story because the children had no choice to what parents they have. Maybe they will have a much better life going forward.
I'm sorry to say this but I have been thru a Guardian(s) myself that was appointed to my child thru the court and I have found that they (guardians) do lie and also tell the children what to say and what not to say. I have also found that they brainwash them too. I personally do not trust some of them at all and I do not care what people have to say about them. I have had to stand up in court myself and have the judge to remove the guardian due to my findings. I was finially given another one that I was able to trust and also someone that was able to help me and my child and see things in the right light.
Getalife I understand the need to go to the restroom, however the DFCS worker should have had another person there during visitation in case that need arises. The who purposes behind supervised visitation is the children are to NEVER be left alone with the parent. What if the mother took this opportunity of being left alone with her children to do more harm physically than what she did mentally. So there is no excuse.
Both parents are guilty of child neglect and should accept the penalty. Mom was not chained to the house and had every opportunity to seek assistance but chose not to. If she is attempting to influence the children's testimony, then she should have no visits with any of the children; she certainly does not need to have them returned to her. I don't care if a church full of people are supportive of her; she should take her lumps for what she has done. Kudos to Judge Roper.
