Police find no link between crimes

  • Follow Metro

Police investigating a fatal beating in Columbia County said Friday they haven't connected it to the shooting of the victim's neighbor Thursday night in Richmond County.

Columbia County sheriff's Capt. Steve Morris said he knows of no link between the two crimes.

"We have been in contact with Richmond County authorities concerning that matter, but there's no evidence to suggest a link," he said.

Richmond County investigators said Rebecca Sears, 41, was shot in the leg late Thursday outside the Healing Hands Physical Therapy Center on Highland Avenue, where she works.

The day before, Ms. Sears' neighbor Laverne Parsons, also 41 and a Healing Hands employee, was brutally beaten in her home. She died Thursday from those injuries.

Ms. Sears lived at 227 Hot Springs Drive in Columbia County's Orchard Hill subdivision. Mrs. Parsons lived at 229 Hots Springs Drive.

Both women were pictured on the company's Web site, which was taken down Friday afternoon. Both locations of Healing Hands in Augusta and Thomson were also closed and phone messages were not returned.

Mrs. Parsons died Thursday afternoon, and Ms. Sears was shot about six hours later.

Ms. Sears told investigators she was walking to her vehicle when a man she did not know appeared from the rear of the building and brandished a pistol.

She said she turned to go back inside when a gunshot grazed both legs.

Ms. Sears told police the man said if she "didn't have his money it would be her face."

He then ran toward a wooded area. Police found a .22-caliber shell casing at the scene, according to the sheriff's office report.

Mrs. Parsons is believed to have been attacked at her home in Columbia County about 9 a.m. Wednesday after return- ing home from dropping her son off at school.

The homes of both women on Hot Springs Drive appeared to have been broken into, and police said Thursday they believe Mrs. Parsons had interrupted a burglary.

An autopsy conducted at the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab in Atlanta confirmed Friday that Mrs. Parsons died of blunt force head trauma, Columbia County Deputy Coroner Harriett Garrison said.

Both Columbia and Richmond county sheriff's offices are working together on her homicide, Capt. Morris said.

the bullet only grazed her

the bullet only grazed her and it was a 22. it makes sense now. that would hurt about as much as a deep cut on the legs. she probably did it herself gave the gun to her son so the cops wouldnt find it and he left and she called the cops.

Halfpint: The neighbors

Halfpint: The neighbors (Sears and her son) killed Parsons who was having an affair with Mr Sears. Parsons took her son to school, came home and was beaten by Sears son. Sears and son made their house look like a break in as well to cover themselves. Sears then gets shot by her son or herself in order to further the cover up. Just my thoughts...

i think this situation is

i think this situation is very sad and heart wrenching.i had a gut feeling something wasnt right.why would anyone suggest that it was an affair with someones husband..especially when this ladies husband is left here for these comments to hurt him forever...dont do that to him...no one knows yet and this poor lady isnt here to defend herself..has this family not been put thru enough? how do we know it doesnt have something to do with work? maybe ms parsons knew somethin of ms. sears and was fixin to report her???i mean come on dont speculate it was an affair on ms parsons part when all that is doing is hurting this womans husband if we dont have to....he is hurting enough..who knows the truth of why except for the person who did...it may have been ms. sears was jealous of ms parsons and wanted her husband and her job..i mean come on.....think about what you say before you say it......my thoughts and prayers go out to the parson family...may god be with you right now and thru your time of grieving

halfpint i think the mother

halfpint i think the mother may have helped. remember a claw hammer AND a baseball bat. and the affair thing makes sense. why she was selling her house and why she left work. but like i said she still didnt deserve to die like that. both should be punished severely. it is sad that she died like that and it is sad her kids have no mother now.

I can't believe the AC still

I can't believe the AC still hasn't reported this! It's on WRDW, NBCAUGUSTA, and WJBF!! (all online) How terrible this situation is and how BIZARRE!! Affair or not, if this is true Ms. Sears has some major issues. How can someone, especially someone with children of her own, kill a child's mother? How can she involve her own son in this? It's terrible!
