It's not just about our stuff

  • Follow Editorials

The Fourth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution talks about "the right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers and effects ..." It has the government in mind, of course.

But we should have the same right to be secure in our homes against the kind of soulless bottom-feeders that crawl out from society's stinking underbelly to kill us as soon as look at us.

So, if the senseless and savage murder of Kay Parsons by an intruder in her home pierced all our hearts, it's because it cuts through the sanctity and security of home that we hold so dear.

The victim just happened to be this 41-year-old doting wife and mother who had returned to her Columbia County home Wednesday morning after taking her son to middle school.

Authorities Friday were investigating the Thursday night shooting and minor wounding of Parsons' neighbor and co-worker, Rebecca Sears, also 41. She was shot and grazed outside the Healing Hands Physical Therapy Center on Highland Avenue where both women worked.

Regardless of whether there is a connection, regardless of the possible motivations in this case, the principle is the same: The "right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers and effects" should be inviolate.

To that end, we've never thought burglary was taken seriously enough under American law. It's not about the sanctity of our "stuff." That's not the point. Stuff can be replaced, returned or repaid. The point is the psychological damage, and the violence done to our peace of mind.

We have a right to be left alone. And we certainly have a right to enter our own house after taking our children to school without worrying whether we'll ever see them or our other loved ones again.

We realize there isn't enough room in prison for all the burglars and thieves out there. But maybe, just maybe, there'd be fewer of them if we found some creative ways to really stick it to the ones we do catch. Fines, community service and restitution that are through the roof -- how about having to pay back 10 times the value of what's stolen or damaged? -- might be a good start.

We've got to stop thinking of burglary as being about our stuff.

It's about our nervous systems -- and sometimes our lives.

Here is one suggestion, I am sure there will be many others. 1) Make first term abortion legal by state law; 2) sterilize unwed mothers after the 1st birth (and wherever possible, neuter the fathers); 3) send school dropouts above the age of 16 and under the age of 17 to vocational training centers; 4) make nonmilitary government service mandatory for all high school dropouts 17 years or older; 5) begin obligatory universal military service (minimum of 2 years) for all healthy and physically able adults ages 18 to 30 following their graduation from high school (with a minimum of 3 years if the individual has gone directly from high school to college and has completed a degree program); and 6) in Georgia (lucky you) be prepared to exercise your rights under the "Castle Doctrine" whenever appropriate. Rearrange the order of my proposal, add other suggestions if you wish, but please do not try to tell me that these steps would not change society for the better. GGpap

GGpap, did you mention that We, the People, should put the "dead" back in "dead-beat dads?" Procreative irresponsibility: now there's a "victimless crime" for ya! "Victimless" unless we don't consider the offspring of DBDs.

GGap, a lot of your proposals depend on the GOVERNMENT to solve all these problems. Do you REALLY want that? How about we just look at how really great America is and be thankful for all we have before we go running around proposing National Socialistic style programs meant to shape our culture and behavior into a perfect society. I mean you have some good ideas but rounding up the youth and putting them into 'trainig centers', sounds like 're-education camps' to me.You suggest the GOVERMENT 'sterilize' ladies if they have a child out of wedlock? So YOU want the GOVERNMENT to decide who is worthy to reproduce based on if a mother and father are married when a child is born? Now THAT sounds very Nazi-like and NOT very freedom loving, or American. By the way, MY son was born without me and my former mate being married. I love and support him and I am GLAD we had him, should I have my testes cut off or should my ex have her ovaries fried for that? By teh way, she went on to marry and have THREE more beautiful children. Obligitory military service? I will sit here now and tell you that these 'steps' would NOT change our society for the better, just YOUR idea of better. So, SEIG HEIL!

The odds are this crime was committed by someone who knows them or someone who lives not far, perhaps even in the neighborhood...A teen or group of teens, someone who was recognizable to her..Someone who is extremely fearful of jail..Did she drop her child off everyday around the same time? What was taken from the two homes? Money, electronics, jewelery, large items that need two people to carry or small things that can fit into someones pocket(s)? Was the house ransacked or was the rooms left undisturbed? Reports of suspicious vehicles in the community recently? This type of burglar is a novice and probably someone who doesn't understand burglars get little time..Matter of fact in Atlanta you bond you abscond to keep burglarizing till your court date, which may or may not come depending on the docket and cooperation of victims..So as a burglar you are golden, as long as you don't harm anyone practicing your craft...That's part of the reason this case hints of novice and someone familiar, afraid of the system, someone with a reputation to protect.

brad owens: Excellent point to GGap, well said!

brad owens, reanalyze your comments and see if the onus is on government or is it on the individual, the way ggap stated. His entire list had to do with those who wish to be part of a responsible and productive society as opposed to those who choose the life of a parasite...usually leading to criminal activity and criminal offspring. Wishing these parasites would recognize what America is is not a solution. Giving them the choice of belonging and operating withing the parameters of polite society doesn't seem to impress them. Enforcing the laws and removing the right to reproduce from those that choose not to live within the parameters while in this country is harsh, but a good idea under the circumstances. Do you really think ggap was referring to you and your son when he offered his list or are you just being needlessly argumentative? Are you intentionally missing his point? motorman5039 agrees with you, doesn't that give you pause?

PT, so in your opinion its OK for the State/Government to control human reproduction in America based on social status and income? Ggap did NOT make exceptions did he? So, in fact I would need to have my testes cut off and her ovaries killed if he had his way. He said, " sterilize unwed mothers after the 1st birth". I did not read into his statements, I just read them. I see government domination of personal freedoms that violate the 4th if we try to do any of the stuff he named except military service. I do NOT want the government deciding WHO is worthy of being full citizens and who should be eradicated by selective birth control.

The gov't control people's reproductiv choices. OMG- they can't even control themselves, Repub or dems, I would never give a gov't entity the responsibilty on morals or ethics. They can't control what they do not possess themselves.

toldya

brad you say it much better than I could.

First off, I don't know how we went from this murder to a discussioin of children without fathers. Considering everything, the murderer possibly doesn't fit that sterotype. But since the subject is here, there is no need to get surgical with anything. Simply do not provide government assistance of any kind for the second child. If a second, third and fourth child are born and the parent can't support the children, bring back the orphanages. Pouring money into the hands of a young unwed mother who can't manage her finances, does nothing to ensure the well being of the children. Orphanages would take care of them and break the cycle.

How about some good old Islamic law? Why do we continue to build concrete palaces for crooks and on the most expensive land possible? Well the answer is the Judges and lawyers need the convenience of being next to their clients. One day we will realize that there is a boundry between counties and that boundry is where the cheap land is and where we should build prisons. That way they would be out of sight and inconvenient for all concerned. Lastly why arent prisons equipped with tents and electrified barbed wire? Or if not tents then metal buildings with electrified barbed wire. And finally why are convicted people allowed visitors?

BTW Gpap, why should the military be saddled with drop outs that society dosen't want? I believe the military is composed of fine young women and men who deserve better than that. As for your comments anout castration, would you allly some type of penalty for businesses that profit from welfare mothers? After all businesses are the ultimate winners in the unwed mother game.

_SisterAbdullahX_

Apparently Gpap sees the military service as a punishment, not the privilege that it is.

As it turns out, the facts put a different light on some of the comments. The neighbor lady and son have been charged with murder.

What is everyone's guess as to motive: romance, drugs, money, other?

Wow, for once I agree with Brad. However, Brad, am I to assume you're not following the guy you voted for, I.e. Barack Obama? He's already out there talking about mandatory service.

BTW, as a former NCO, we have enough problems with people that DID voluntarily enlist. Don't force in the rubbish who don't want to be there.

Chronicle, you are absolutely right about a person's home being inviolate. An American has the right to be secure at home and indeed, to employ every reasonable means to protect that home, which is in so many ways equivalent to a person's life. What's really disturbing in this case is that the neighbors have been arrested for the murder. If they are indeed guilty, then that is particularly frightening, no matter what the motives might have been. What a horrible breach of trust! Ironically, vigilance against "them" is much harder when "they" are supposed to be our friends. We will all just have to keep on and try not to become victims of the paranoia inherent in this incident.

DISSMAN, and others that do not read well: Where have I advocated forcing high school drop-outs into military service? I have great respect for our military and have suggested that ONLY high school graduates (or college graduates) be required to serve in universal military training. Drop-outs, 17 years or older would be required to perform in some worthwhile government service (building walls on our southern border, cleaning and maintaining campgrounds, building roads, etc.). As for un-wed mothers and fathers...I've given them the choice to abort their careless "mistake" for not using safeguards before engaging in sexual activities that lead to pregnancies; and actually, I'm subliminally suggesting that marriage would be simpler solution. You may be enjoying yourselves by taking me to task but I fail to see many suggestions coming from you that might address the problem that the article refers to; namely safety and security in our homes. The problem, as I imply, is more than a need for more education, burglar alarms, police patrols, and guns in the home, and posting comments on the AC comments site. GGpap

Posted by brad.owens on Sat Mar 28, 2009 5:53 AM.... Our society was better, especially our young men, when we had a draft and obligatory military service. As a Basic Training Commander, I and my NCOs saved more than one kid who otherwise would have been in jail or worse. I also support kicking our the disruptive students and sending them to alternative school where there is strict discipline or YDC as their alternative. I also support mandatory sterilization of any woman who has two kids our of wed lock (especially when they don't know who baby daddy be.

Posted by Riverman1 on Sat Mar 28, 2009 9:28 AM....True, Masonic Homes for orphans have produced fine, upstanding and productive citizens, Germany runs government operated orphanges for those who can not afford to raise a child when had out of wedlock.

corgimom

Unwed mothers are supposed to be sterilized? What about the unwed fathers who got them that way?

How could anyone kill their neighbor.. this is not some nameless faceless person that has no connection to you and is threatening you with harm.. Sears, a mother herself with a son in the 8th grade knowing Parsons is a mother/wife with a son in the 7th grade and attacks and kills a neighbor and co-worker who has children that go to school together. this is absolutely heinous..

TheMaskedMan

Once you've been burglarized, the peace you feel in your home has been forever violated.. your safe home is safe no more..
That in and of itself is a crime and should have appropriate consequences..

This is a sad situation, a young beautiful life that ended way too soon. May the complete truth be found. The guilty parties involved suffer the pain they inflicted on Kay. And may God be with the families.
