Students at the Academy of Richmond County could be siphoned off and rezoned to two other schools to ease overcrowding.
School board members gave the tentative OK Thursday to relieve overcrowding at Richmond Academy by sending some of its students to Josey and Laney high schools, both of which are under-enrolled.
The plan is only a proposal at this point. Before any final action is taken, the public will have an opportunity to offer input and the federal courts will make a ruling to ensure the plan doesn't conflict with its desegregation order.
A public forum will be held at 5:30 p.m. April 20 at Tubman Middle School.
In other business Thursday, the board:
- Tentatively approved offering $3.3 million to purchase with the city 90 acres from Commercial and Military Systems at Mike Padgett Highway and Lumpkin Road. The property will be a joint transportation facility.
- Approved a $132,500 settlement over a March 2008 accident in which a bus rear-ended a car at a stop sign. The board must pay $50,000 as its deductible.

The Acree Court order could have been done away with ten years ago, but the attorneys won't allow it...too much money for them managing it.
Right. We Richmond County taxpayers are of course paying legal fees to BOTH sides. Many schools system employees and consultants have to prepare reports for the court that involve keeping track of all kinds of racial statistics. It's money down a rat hole.
Now, as far as the rezoning of students: there will be a public hearing on April 20. Presumably the public will have 30 days after that to comment. Then school system officials will have to collate those comments. Then they can submit the final report to the court for approval. It looks like Richmond Academy will remain overcrowded in the 2009-2010 school year. Why didn't they start this process earlier?
The fact that Augusta is still under a court order for school desegregation is insane and points to the political corruptness our national government has sunk to....as for moving the children to Josey and Laney what a great idea...ARC has enough problems handling the violence associated with that school now... decreasing the number of students and moving them so other administrators and teachers (at Laney and Josey) can help ARC is only common sense....Dr Bedden please use all your abilities to clean up this once great school....
Little Lamb, may I set you straight about one thing: Please do not imply Pete is a rat. Everybody knows that he's really a pig. Why else would the long-time(37 years this Summer) school board attorney be known in informed circles as Porcine Pete?
