Charter schools lack supervision, audit says
ATLANTA --- The Georgia Department of Education doesn't adequately monitor the state's 113 charter schools to ensure they are meeting academic standards, according to an audit released Thursday.
The report by the Department of Audits and Accounts says the state's charter school division has yet to comply with a 1998 Georgia law requiring an independent review of whether the specialized schools pass muster. The state is doing little to make sure local school boards are paying attention to their charter schools, which operate independently but receive taxpayer dollars, the audit says.
House speaker offers alternative to DOT plan
ATLANTA --- House Republicans are distancing themselves from Gov. Sonny Perdue's proposal to overhaul Georgia's transportation bureaucracy.
House Speaker Glenn Richardson said Thursday that he will offer a proposal that could bypass Mr. Perdue's efforts to create an agency to take over many of the Transportation Department's duties.
Mr. Richardson would not offer details on the proposal. The committee is scheduled to vote on it today.
