Club will present awards to women of distinction

The Sisters Only Club will have its third annual Shero Award Ceremony on Saturday.

"We began the Shero program to recognize the outstanding efforts of women in the CSRA," said Cher Best, the founder and president of the club. "We recognize women in a variety of categories who have made an impact in the community."

Awards will be given in the following categories: vision; health and social services; media; law and government; community service; youth mentoring; business; and faith and spirituality.

A new award, the Woman of the Year award, also will be given, Ms. Best said.

"This award takes the program to the next level and identifies a woman excelling in all aspects of her life," she said. "She is excelling in (her) family life, professional life, spiritual life and throughout the community. This award recognizes a woman excelling in everything that she does."

The public submitted nominations during a three-month period. A selection committee has chosen the award recipients, who will be announced during the ceremony, she said.

The nominees are: Tawanna Kelly, the house manager of Ronald McDonald House Charities of Augusta; Earnestine Lockett, the youth leader at a Seventh-day Adventist Church; Monique Braswell, a co-host of WNRR News Radio; Angela Odom, a community volunteer; Angela Barnes, a health and community activist; Larissa Jones, a youth mentor; Shannon Mapp, a business owner; Judith Simon-Butler, a director and drama instructor; Gwendolyn Watts, a community volunteer; Angela Gaston, a retirement service officer at Fort Gordon; Arlean Edwards, a radio talk-show host and executive producer; Betty Harris, a business owner; Hazel Battle, the founder of Child's World Day Care Centers; Judy Heath, community volunteer who is retired from the Department of Juvenile Justice; Angie Townes, a business owner; and Vivian Wiley Thompson Sylvester, a community volunteer.

The Sisters Only Club, a nonprofit organization, was founded in 1999 as a book club and has transformed into a civic club. For more information about the club, visit www.sistersonlyclub.com.
