Nation is teetering on catastrophe

  • Follow Letters

Are we about to turn an economic disaster into an economic catastrophe?

We have entered an era of $500 billion deficits. In a few years, the interest payment on the national debt could consume all collected taxes. The deficit is deferred taxation. Benefits are paid now with collection of taxes being passed on to another generation.

Economic calamity is the cutting issue. Throughout history, nations have become insolvent. What makes the United States unique is the rapid pace that this nation has incurred its level of indebtedness.

We are witnessing a flight from reality and responsibility. Elected officials are the responsibility of the citizenry, and they must be held accountable. Government spending must be limited to what is constitutionally necessary.

Free enterprise is fundamental to freedom and economic prosperity. However, freedom is understood today as some sort of gift from government. Because of this, the government now controls the people, not the people the government.

H. Samuel Atkins Jr.

Paranoia? Methinks Atkins is an expert on flights from reality. Am surprised he didn't borrow a page from Humpty Dumpty's book by railing against the Gestapo-like police who enforce laws against trafficking drugs to minors.

You're right Mr Atkins, but

You're right Mr Atkins, but the end isn't as near as you imply. We're on the right path, as a nation, to collapse, but I still think the general population will over throw this path with the next election. If not, we'll just have to recover like every other failed nation. This isn't Armageddon.

You Republican idiot,Letter

You Republican idiot,Letter to the editor, still using that lame duck excuse, being used by Republicans in Congress, about President Obama spending budget is putting the nation deep in debt. You must not know; You must spend money to make money. You need to write a letter to Republicans leaders in Congress and tell them the American people are all ears and still waiting on they alternative spending budget plan of their own.

The boy who cried "wolf" had
Unpublished

The boy who cried "wolf" had no credibility because his judgement was poor and he lost respect due his inability to accurately process the situation. His flawed motives along with his willingness to scream "wolf" became nothing more than a exercise in humor and a laughingstock. A contemporary example are those individuals who quote philosophical theories of doom, based on their biased views, while failing to recognize the practical dilemma the nation finds itself. Once the true amount of debt is actually determined (not predictions or CBO numbers, not (R) or (D) numbers), but true numbers, the country will set a national priority of serious debt reduction and solve the problem. Now, it may require a change in currency or a combined currency strategy, but the issue will be solved. So there isn't a bad wolf coming for the sheep, but probably some global currency coming for the dollar.

No need to point fingers. If you go to any major book retailer, you can find plenty of books written in the early 2000's predicting this current financial mess that we are in. Hope you got your money invested, wisely. Peace.

The Bush administration

The Bush administration warned lawmakers not to raise the tax rate of private equity and hedge funds or their managers, maintaining that it would injure the economy and discourage risk-taking.

The top hedge fund managers collected a total of $11.6 billion last year, which marked the third-best year on record,
even as the industry delivered its worst returns and hundreds of fund firms were forced out of business.

But, there are people who think that we should keep doing what we've done in the recent past because that has worked so well.

Bush did this...Bush did

Bush did this...Bush did that....idot president. PLEASE!!!!! You Dimwitted Bush haters give the president of this country credit for having WAY too much power. No on person caused this mess. No war caused this mess. It takes 535 people to cause this mess and it takes 20 to 30 years. It is called our Congress and THEY made this mess. The Congress, House and Senate, control the money and the policy. All of these free spending, de-regulating, social spending, pork barrel policies were approved by and nice mixture of Republicans and Democrats over the past few decades. We have 535 idiots messing with stuff they know nothing about except that it ain't their money so they don't care where it comes from. And now that it is caving in around us we give Congress a pass, blame it on Bush, toss the ball to some rookie who has no experience and has never done anything, and he hands the ball off to a tax doger (Geithner) who has been part of the problem for years. Folks please wake up and forget who the hell is president or was president. Throw these incompetent idiots out of the House and Senate. I don't care if you vote for a Dem or Repub as long it's a new one. Incumbents out ! Send a message

madmax, Bush did push through

madmax, Bush did push through some very expensive programs like the AARP-vote-gathering Medicare-D plan which will cost more than the Iraq / Afgan wars combined... all this while cutting tax revenue. By allowing his father's 'pay as you go' law to expire in 2003, he was able to continue spending spree without paying for it. The third round of tax cuts were done using a little used power of the President to allow it to pass with a simple majority of Congress in times of emergencies. Cheney was the deciding vote. Don't tell me that the Bush Admin. did not take more than their share of liberties with our laws to push his cut tax and spend policies.

My MAIN point was that it

My MAIN point was that it takes a vote by the Congress to spend money. I am not defending Bush's spending. I am just saying that it took a majority vote among 535 idiots (okay, + Cheney) to do it. Just like it took a majority vote of 535 idiots to put us few trillion dollaars in debt by the latest flock of 535 idiots in only 50 days. No matter which party is in power and which party has the presidency, there is always enough bribery and pork and partisanship to persuade enough members of the opposing party to pass bad legislation and crazy spending bills. Witness what has gone on the passed few weeks. Bills passed spending amounts of money no human can even comprehend. But somehow enough lunacy, and pork managed to convince some Republicans to vote for it. Congress is addicted to spending our money and they seem to think that the cure for all problems is SPEND MORE MONEY. I say throw them all out and yes, eleict a bunch of rookies. They certainly could not do any worse. After all, that is how we got Obama. A lot of voters said "what the hell, he can't do any worse than Bush". Well I think that goes for all of our represntatives in the House and Senate too. Send a message!

There's been a lot of honor

There's been a lot of honor in government, sabertooth. Just not every time, all of the time. At present, honor is never considered under any circumstances. The Clinton administration appears honorable in comparison. This is not the change I can believe in. I was hoping for any kind of improvement. I can't say I'm surprised, though.
