AUGUSTA, Ga. - Sarah Carpenter Alvey, 91, entered into rest Tuesday, March 17, 2009, in Martinez, GA. Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 21, 2009, at 11:00 AM, from the chapel of Chance & Hydrick Funeral Directors with the Reverend Jim McCollough officiating. Interment will be in Habersham United Methodist Church Cemetery, near Perkins, GA, at 2:00 P.M., with the Reverend Gene Sheffield officiating. Mrs. Alvey was a native of Burke County, GA, and a graduate of Waynesboro High School in 1935 and Hurst Business School in Augusta. She retired in 1974 from Eisenhower Medical Center after 25 years of civilian service with the Army. Following retirement she did volunteer work for several organizations. She was a member of the Silverhaired Legislature for 7 years and the American Business Women's Association. She was a charter member of the Burns Memorial United Methodist Church, a former member of the Martinez United Methodist Church and their XYZ SC group, St. Mark United Methodist Church and their Young at Heart SC Group and was a member of St. John United Methodist Church and the Joymakers SC at Woodlawn United Methodist Church. Sarah is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Emerson E. and Nancy Alvey of Louisville, KY and Alan K. and Emma Alvey of Martinez; granddaughters and their spouses, Jody Lynn and Richard Stovall of Atlanta and Jaqueline and Jim Godwin of Powder Springs, GA; grandson and his spouse, Jeffrey Alan and Stephanie Alvey of Waco, TX; great granddaughters Leslie her spouse Joey Mongelli, Kaitlyn and Hannal Godwin of Powder Springs and Emelia Claire Alvey of Waco, TX; as well as a large number of other relatives and friends. Memorials may be made to the Breast Health Center, University Health Care Foundation, 2100 Central Avenue, Suite D, Augusta, GA 30904.
