The Augusta Chronicle named Alan English as its executive editor Monday.

Special
Alan English
Mr. English has been the executive editor of the Gannett-owned newspaper The Times in Shreveport, La., since April 2004. Before that, he was the Times' managing editor for four years.
Don Bailey, the president of the Chronicle , said the Chronicle is pleased to gain an editor with Mr. English's background. Gannett, the nation's largest newspaper company, publishes 85 daily newspapers in the United States, including USA Today.
"We look forward to working with Alan. He's a dynamic editor with vision who will lead our newspaper and Web sites with exciting new initiatives," Mr. Bailey said.
Mr. English has more than 20 years of experience in journalism. He started as a photographer with the Knoxville Journal in Knoxville, Tenn., in 1987. He has worked as a photo editor for several newspapers, was photo director for Gannett Suburban Newspapers in White Plains, N.Y. , and assistant managing editor for photography at the Democrat and Chronicle in Rochester, N.Y.
Although the economic downturn has resulted in substantial revenue losses and layoffs for newspapers, Mr. English said this is an exciting time to lead a media company.
"While the job of continuing the work to serve the community faces tough industry headlines, opportunities abound in print and new media in the local market," Mr. English said. "I am energized for the hard work that includes expanding ways to reach more readers, elevating the investigative journalism and interfacing closely with customers."
During Mr. English's tenure, the Shreveport newspaper won national and state awards for coverage of Hurricane Katrina and the Columbia shuttle disaster. Times investigations have earned accolades for ethics reform.
Mr. English will join the Chronicle on April 6. He succeeds Dennis Sodomka, who left the Chronicle in July 2008.
Mr. English and his wife, Janice, have two children.
"Our family is excited by what the CSRA community has to offer. We are looking forward to making Augusta our home," he said.
