Investigations of shootings involving officers continue

  • Follow Metro

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation continues to look into shootings involving three Richmond County sheriff's deputies.

Agent Gary Nicholson said his agency continues to review information for cases involving deputies Jose Ortiz, Michael Hodge and Scott White.

On Dec. 15, Deputies Hodge and Ortiz were working in the Cherry Tree Crossing housing development and tried to stop Justin Elmore's SUV, suspecting he had drugs. According to police, Mr. Elmore, 23, rammed the deputies' vehicle in an attempt to get away. The officers fired, killing Mr. Elmore. The shooting set off a near riot in the Cherry Tree Crossing area and created tensions that had authorities on edge for days.

Both deputies have been placed on desk duty. Deputy Ortiz has been working for the sheriff's property crimes division, and Deputy Hodge has been working in the quartermaster's office, according to sheriff's Internal Affairs Sgt. Pat Young.

Agent Nicholson said the findings of the investigation will be submitted to the district attorney's office when it is finished, but he gave no date.

"We're still waiting on some reports back from the FBI on that one," he said, referring to squad-car videotapes sent away for enhancement.

The GBI is still gathering information in the case of Deputy White, who shot Georgette Reid in a Christmas Day hostage situation on Sunny Day Road in Hephzibah.

Ms. Reid was fighting with her live-in girlfriend when she struck her in the head with a hammer and took her 4-year-old son hostage with a knife. As Deputy White entered the room, he shot Ms. Reid in the shoulder and pulled the boy away.

Deputy White is back on full duty with the sheriff's K-9 unit, Sgt. Young said.

Might I suggest that the most

Might I suggest that the most vociferous critics of these RCSD deputies' usages of force ride with them on their beats for one week.

Since the election of our new
Unpublished

Since the election of our new president, nationally there has been at least ten shootings of unarmed Americans at the hands of police. Of course, the victims are minorities and the shooter is mainly white officers, but some non-minorities don't understand whats happening. A minority officer is representing the agency that provide his weapon & uniforms. Because a minority officer shoots and kill a minority citizen, most whites believe that racial profiling and Constitutional violations cannot be charged. Thats false! Who dreamt up such foolishness? And in fact, those minority officers will be the main ones to bite the dust because the agency will throw them to the wolves. Some white policeman are using their positions to demonstrate contempt for the presidential election and it's deadly for the brothas. And the spotlight will get brighter because history's lessons are not a positive development in view of recent investigations.

If you had a video clearly

If you had a video clearly showing that the shooting took place exactly as the deputies described, those who don't like cops would still yell ( they had no right to shoot them) The same people can take a thug with a violent past of illegal guns & drugs & within 24 hrs turn him into the Best Family Man anyone could imagine. Some things wll always remain the same & without change.

Thanks to the AC for keeping

Thanks to the AC for keeping on this matter. Common sense tells me something is in the investigation that is troubling or it would have been released by now. Investigating the Kennedy assassination didn't take this long....The most recent incident of the officers firing at the man who had been arguing with his mother is also one that should be critically examined by our own Sherriff's Office. Six shots were fired at the man driving in his driveway. Inside the car were two others. One of them was not charged with anything, although the other passenger had a concealed weapon and was charged with that. A deputy fired 6 shots with at least one innocent passerger because he felt threatened? In Col. Cty. the policy is for the officer not to put himself where he could be endangered by a moving vehicle. Is it time for the RCSO to incorporate a similar policy?

Justus4 and Riverman1 here we

Justus4 and Riverman1 here we go again with your conspiricy bull****. Neither of you were there at the time of this incident. And if I read all your past post correctly your scary, liberal tree hugging hynies dont plan to ever go to the projects. If you think you know the policy and procedures so well, go down to 401 and sign up for a ride a long with a deputy for a full shift. Oh and bring an extra pair of underwear.. you will need it.

And by the way this isnt Col.

And by the way this isnt Col. City. You CANNOT predict the mind of a criminal. You have what is commonly known as Fight of Flight Syndrome. A criminal, suspect, douchebag doesnt care about no one elses life but his. And when approached by police they either fight or take flight. Law enforcemnt officers have to protect themselves and the unsuspected public when this occurs. This goes for white and black officers.

Elmore chose his fate that

Elmore chose his fate that night; and some of the local dopeboys and thugs glorified him. How about the 100's of black people who were shot an or killed in Cherrytree prior to this incident. Where are their vigils and marches? Where were you Justus4 and Riverman1? You people make me sick. This was a high level dopeboy that chose his own fate and tried to run over RC deputies to flee the scene and not go to jail. He is responisble for providing thousands of crack heads and dope fiends with drugs even killing most of them with that poison. Close your mouths Justus4 and Riverman1 until the final report is released!!
