Madgen is named top player

Augusta State's Ben Madgen said winning takes precedence over being named the Southeast Region Player of the Year on Wednesday.

"It's a very big honor," he said. "But it doesn't really mean much without team success. If we win the South Atlantic Regional I'll be a lot happier."

Madgen is racking up the awards after being named to the Peach Belt Conference's first team. After helping the fourth-ranked Jaguars win the Peach Belt Tournament on Sunday, the junior guard was named tournament most valuable player.

Augusta State coach Dip Metress believes Madgen was named the region's top player because of familiarity. The Jaguars played Catawba and Lenoir-Rhyne in December. In those contests, Madgen averaged 20 points.

"People in our region have had a chance to see him," Metress said. "And he's had a good career."
