If you realize all the hidden taxes you're already paying now, in addition to federal and state income taxes, you'll find that you're paying more now in those income and hidden taxes than you'll be paying in consumption taxes up front with the Fair Tax. The difference is that with the Fair Tax, those hidden taxes are removed, and added back in as a simple and visible sales tax. Additionally, you don't pay any income tax or any social security contributions. You keep ALL of your paycheck. The only tax you will ever pay is the sales tax. PERIOD. With the current income tax you are paying hidden taxes at a rate of 10-30% on everything you buy. Under the Fair Tax, those hidden taxes are removed.

iwillhelp, you represent the vast majority of Americans that are only partially aware of a situation. You've read the opposition to the Fair Tax without reading the Fair Tax. I believe this same method of gaining knowledge led many that went to the web site that "proved" Bush ordered the 9-11 attack to actually fall for the hoax. Read the Fair Tax book. It's interesting, well documented and researched, and an easy read. Only 180 pages, or so. You'll be stunned. This LTE has a lot of merit.

Most all 3rd and 4th world countries have "fair tax" isn't it about time we join them in their idiocy? That would fit in with our long range plan for the country, having a 2 class system.

Most people couldn't run a lemonade stand much less a business and that is why they don't understand that taxes are a cost to a business just like labor, materials, pencils, etc. Business don't pay taxes now, they pass those costs along to the end user just as they pass along all other costs.

I for one have read the Fair Tax book and none of the counter arguments and still think it is a bad idea. While it would be great for this society to focus more on maintaining what we have and move away from the consumer driven society, the Fair Tax would all but wipe out the auto industry and new construction. Government would be so under funded that basic services would have to be cut (the real plan behind the "Fair Tax"). I am by no means an economists, account or lawyer and even I could see the huge loopholes through which those with means could avoid their "Fair" share again.

The major one is assuming there is a 23% "imbedded" tax in everything you buy and that prices would automatically be lowered by that amount. They claim that the tax is 23% by figuring if you spend a dollar, you pay $1.30, $.30 is 23% of $1.30, not the actual 30% tax. The 23% figure is also only counted for one year then can be raised as needed. They claim it will eliminate the IRS, but creates in The Dept of the Treasury an "Excise Tax Bureau" and a "Sales Tax Bureau". A rose by any other name. Their figures on sales count what the Fed, state, and local governments spend in the private sector. Governments will not pay taxes so the projected revenue will be far less than they claim. We have seen the financial situation of states that rely primarily on sales tax revenues. They also claim the 16th Amendment will be repealed by "companion legislation". That would require a Constitutional Amendment, not legislation. Just a few examples f the bull put forth by the backers of this scheme. If it sounds too good to be true....

Sounds like everyone hollering about the embedded taxes failed to read FAIRTAX --- STRAIGHTENING OUT SOME CONFUSION By Neil Boortz Where he had to correct where his first book was misleading on this.
According to him, the taxes took out of someone's paycheck belongs to the employer not the worker and he says that keeping all your pay means you will at least bring home what is currently your take home pay now. He also says that in order for the embedded tax to come out of the product the employer will have to keep the tax they pay on a workers behalf, meaning your net pay will be the same as now.

Won't the fairtax lower taxes because it will force the MILLIONS who are in our country now illegally (as well as foreign tourists) to pay a sales tax? Those taxes that are currently being consumed by undocumented illegals and those that make money illegally and do not pay taxes will be compensated for with the fairtax? I have not read Boortz and Hinder's book but I have read some on fairtax.org. Correct me if I'm wrong.

If our country was currently using the FairTax system and had always done so, would we even WANT to change to our current system? If you had been used to always getting every dime of your paycheck on payday, would you actually WANT to change to a system that allows the government to seize YOUR money each payday? If a person went up to you and demanded you give them 25% (or more) of the money you earned, they'd be arrested for robbery. The government does the same thing to each of us every payday.

It will cost us more because of the Illegals . Most of them buy used items at flemarkets and yard sales. Since the Fait Tax taxes Government spending and also heath care then when they go to the doctor or hospital on our expenses it will be fairtaxed costing us more. the ones on food stamps will be costing the tax payers more because Food is also taxed, the ones getting free housing will be costing us more because Rent is taxed. Don't see how it will help when its going to cost more!!!

The fairtax is 30% tax-exclusive and that's the only way to figure it on product and services. Exclusive is figured $500+30%=$650 but the fairtax bill says its a tax-inclusive meaning they want you to see it like this $650-23%=$500. No matter how you look at it, its still a 30% increase!

I think the fair tax is a brilliant idea, but I see one problem right away. If I am the manufacturer of a product, and suddenly it cost me 30% less to produce a product, am I going to reduce the wholesale cost to the retailer so that the 30% can be added back in as a sales tax. I see a 30% increase in profits, with the 30% fair tax still added on. The fair tax is a brilliant idea, and if it would work as proposed, it would be fine. But who is going to enforce a price reduction on manufacturers to make the fair tax work? Besides, the manufacturer will have to pay the fair tax on the materials they purchase to produce their goods, so somewhere this will be passed along, as it is now, in the price of the product. I am not an economist and od not understand every facet of the fair tax, but I do have a basic understanding of how business works, and the fair tax does have some kinks.

EVERY 15TH BECOMES LIKE APRIL 15
Small businesses and services will have to file taxes on the fairtax EVERY 15TH OF EVERY MONTH.(THE BILL SAYS)
These services become tax collectors and have to do taxes before every 15th of every month. this includes plumbers, people who cut grass, baby setters, landscapers. roofers, exterminators, tree service, handyman, house painters, I do not think people are realizing all that are conceder services, NONE OF THESE HAS EVER COLLECTED A SALES TAX BEFORE!!

The FairTax Bill says The Secretary of the Treasury will be responsible for creating an authority for overseeing and ruling over the state sales tax administering authority and may employ persons as necessary for the administration conduct hearings, prescribe rules and regulations. and perform other such duties.
SEC 508 says the tax administering authority may conduct reasonable audits and examine the books, papers, records. Persons are subject to administrative summons by the sales tax administering authority for records, documents, and testimony required by the sales tax administering authority to accurately determine liability for tax.

*SOUNDS Like the IRS to me, I could almost guarantee the Secretary puts the IRS over it because they already trained in this very thing.

Anyone will agree that the tax system is full of holes. But I am not about to read Boortz's book to learn more about what we should do about it. Is he the same guy that talks about 'Wealth Envy' (his term for resentment against the rich and powerful for jiggering the system in their favor)? And getting rid of the 'Death Tax' (his term for the Estate Tax that is only paid by a fraction of the wealthiest people in this country)? 'Fair Tax' is very likely the same sort of coverup language that really means something completely different. I hope people will come to base their beliefs on something besides books written by self serving hyperadvocates.

You pay on what you spend. You spend a little. You pay little taxes. You spend alot. You pay alot of taxes. So rich people would pay more and poor people would pay less. No income tax will be taken out of your check so you have more purchasing power. The IRS is the biggest crook out there. My uncle won that big lotto last year and before he got his cut...Uncle Sam took 18 million if not more and then he is taxed on "gifts" that he gives people. It's ridiculous.

The FAIR tax is fair to the rich; but no so fair to the poor. We need to make a turn off that road that we have been going down for lo these past 8 years.

mirrowman, there is no business to business tax. Competition would drive the price down. One company could not stay at the increased profit margin without sacrificing market share.

Since the Fairtax people love comparing it to the income tax lets do that in a untwisted way.The prebate does not un-tax you it only ups your pay, A single person making $25,000 a year, add their $2300 prebate bringing it to $28,000, This person will most likely spend every dime so their tax rate will be 30% . Now someone making $1million will also get the same prebate bringing their total to $1,002,300, Studies show the average for this group don't even spend half in a year , even spending half their tax rate will only be 15% compared to their income. FAIR?

SORRY -25000+2300=27300

So maybe people will quit living beyond their means which could have let us avoid the mess we are in now.

themaninthemirror, I don't think you understand competition. If you see your cost of production decreased by a certain percentage, and your competitor's does as well, wouldn't it behoove you to remove that amount from the cost of the product, thereby giving you more of a market share? Trust me, your competitor will if you don't. Competition dictates that it'll be removed. The goal of a business is to make profit and increase market share.

No one is making a profit right now, (NO Profit= NO Tax) even the Fairtax site says most companies are not paying taxes so the price you get now is the lowest it will get unless workers take a pay cut.

Do you know WHY the site says most companies don't pay taxes? Because they pass them on to YOU! My God, you libs aren't the brightest things in the country, are you? We have the second highest corporate tax rate in the industrialized world and companies are sending their jobs overseas. ..and you fail to see the correlation? You don't stimulate a capitalist economy, which ours is, by implementing socialism.
