This is an idea prompted by Rob Pavey's article "Cast away?" in the March 6 Chronicle . Those famous golf statues represent an important part of Augusta's heritage, and it would indeed be a shame if they stay in a warehouse or leave our city. Here is a suggestion for their disposition that we have borrowed from our former hometown, Cincinnati.
A few years ago, Cincinnati was faced with the problem of declining railroad use and likely shutdown of its 1930s terminal building. The terminal had a wonderful collection of valuable murals that depicted important historical scenes of Cincinnati's history. A very progressive group recognized the value of these murals and worked to get many of them relocated to the Greater Cincinnati Airport.
Today, air travelers there are greeted with these impressive art works on the terminal concourse walls. I can easily envision the golf statues having an equally positive impact on our city's air travelers, and inciting pride in our citizens for this element of our city's heritage.
I discussed this with Rob Pavey, and he offered the additional benefit that airport security likely would be a beneficial aspect for the long term preservation of these artworks, in contrast to the previous less-secure outdoor displays.
Please consider this possibility for the statues' future.
