Deputy fires shots as man tries to flee

  • Follow Metro

A Richmond County deputy fired several shots at an Augusta man Friday morning after the suspect attempted to hit the officer with his SUV, authorities said.

The incident occurred after deputies responded to the home of Brandon David Langston, 21, of the 2900 block of Jackson Street, because of an argument between the suspect and his mother, according to Richmond County sheriff's Investigator Tess Alexander-Brunson.

When the two deputies arrived, Mr. Langston fled. The deputies pursued Mr. Langston, and he doubled back to the house and began to drive away in his SUV, sheriff's Sgt. Blaise Dresser said.

The suspect was ordered to stop by Deputy Anthony Carroll, who was standing in the roadway. According to a police report, the suspect "refused and drove towards Deputy Carroll."

Deputy Carroll fired six shots at the car, causing the suspect to jump the curb and strike a telephone pole, Sgt. Dresser said. No one in the car was injured in the shooting.

"He was standing in the street trying to stop the car and the guy was accelerating at him," Sgt. Dresser said. "He continued to accelerate at him and (Deputy Carroll) discharged his weapon several times."

Mr. Langston continued to drive his SUV on three wheels before stopping on Kevin Drive, where he was taken into custody.

He is charged with aggravated assault on an officer, obstruction, driving without a licence, reckless driving, and attempting to elude an officer, according to police.

Two other men were in the car, including Orenthal James Seabrooks, 22, of the 3700 block of Massoit Drive, who was charged with possessing a weapon with an altered serial number, Investigator Alexander-Brunson said.

A third person in the car was not charged.

Deputy Carroll, who has worked for the department since December 2004, remains on duty.

Good work. We have a sheriffs department that deserves our praise. They are cleaning up Harrisburg! Now it is upon Ashley Wright and her team to sock it to them. Young people with concealed weapons is a big problem. I hope that they have to pay dearly because they were up to no good....."Gansta" want to bees need to be put away.

Dang, six shots and missed all of um? I wonder how close he was? That mother could have ended up with a dead son after calling the police for him disrespecting her.

Craig Spinks

Riverman1, a son's death for disrespecting his Mother would have constituted "just desserts," in my book.

Riverman1

CraigSpinks, I can see you walking around your house with a pistol ready for anyone dissing Mama. I wonder what her comments are today after the shooting? I mean, heck...restriction for a few weeks, no allowance, no car, no ice cream, no getting to be the racecar in Monopoly...anything has to be better than that.

UncleBill

People in a moving vehicle are really not all that easy to hit.

Craig Spinks

Riverman1, I don't need a pistol to take care of my business.

Riverman1

Craig, you be bad, if taking care of business means the same as "just desserts."

He was arguing with his mom. Why is a cop standing infront of the car. Nothing serious happen. People have arguements sometimes with their mom all the time. Are cops going to shoot at anybody with argues with their mom. And then wants to drive away. I can't argue with my mom and get in my car and drive away. Cops who abuse the badge are a threat to society.

Deputy Carroll is a brave man. Thank you for trying to stop a criminal and risking your own life in the process.

Riverman1

LL, I missed the part about him being a criminal. What was that about? I thought he had dissed his mother because she wouldn't let him treat her without respect? You said the man was a criminal. Did he have a record? Was a violent felony suspected to be in progress?

Riverman1

I could be wrong. But looking out for the police interests, I think a poster said yesterday the passenger in the vehicle pointed a gun at the officer and that the driver of the vehicle attempted to run over the officer. That poster said we didn't have a clue. Maybe so. Where is that post and poster now? Elaborate a little if you would. You could be right and we need all the info as you said.

When the two deputies arrived, Mr. Langston fled. The deputies pursued Mr. Langston, and he doubled back to the house and began to drive away in his SUV. The boy screwed up when he tried to run from the police. Once the officer's arrive on the scene, you are not allowed to leave. Then to disobey an order to stop. The kid would have been fine if he had just talked to the police but evidently more was going on that just mom and son having an argument.

Riverman1

I agree that an order to stop should not be disobeyed. I learned that when I was a lot younger and attempted to go around an officer directing traffic at an accident who took offense. I kept going and another officer followed me and pulled me over miles down the road. He gave me a warning, but I learned my lesson, let me tell you!!!

Sprintman spewing more of his BS... only reading what he wants to read into things!!! You can argue with your mom and then drive away, but you cant flee from law enforcement you dolt!!! Come up with more excuses for these criminals. The driver already had a lenghty record for just a year or so!!!!! And he already used his first offender, so maybe he will get a little time to think about all the trouble hes been in!!

lifelongresidient

thank god the deputy was not hurt, may your aim be true the next time you find your life in danger for keeping the honest and decent citizens safe. how decent can the pert be if he is arguing with his mother, the woman who carried, birthed and cared for him up until this point in his life
