Batesburg man driving moped dies in crash

A 52-year-old Batesburg, S.C., man was killed in a crash early Friday on U.S. Highway 1 in Aiken County.

Sylvester Morris died at the scene of the crash near Batesburg, said Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton. The wreck occurred just before 6 a.m. as Mr. Morris was driving a 2008 Yamaha moped northbound on Highway 1, Mr. Carlton said.

Mr. Morris hit the driver side door of a 1999 Chevrolet S-10 pickup driven by Elizabeth Turner, also of Batesburg, Mr. Carlton said, adding that Ms. Turner was trying to turn left onto Highway 1 from Chinquapin Church Road when the collision occurred.

He said Mr. Morris was then struck by a northbound 2004 Volvo Bobtail tractor, driven by Lowell Holloway, of Leesville, S.C. South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating. Ms. Turner and Mr. Holloway were not injured.

No decision in debate over Brown estate

AIKEN — A proposed settlement over the estate of James Brown will continue to be debated later this month in an Aiken County courtroom.

Judge Jack Early heard from estate trustee Bob Buchanan and Russell Bauknight, an accountant appointed to examine the settlement , on Friday.

The judge ended the proceedings saying they would continue either the week of March 16 or March 23. Until then, he ruled that if trustees Mr. Buchanan or Adele Pope receive an offer on the estate, they must present it before the court before taking any action.

We had better bring these violent acts on society under control through a mirad of ways to include education, parent involvement, proper interaction, etc. and when those fail, then lock the thugs up for quite some time and if they commit a second offense after being given a second chance, then put them in a small cell with no ammenities for the remainder of their miserable life. Let people know up front what road they are heading down and that our court system isn't a joke and continued slaps on the wrist. We must properly educate but when that fails we must issue swift and severe punishment.

wildman

Not that I support their actions but at least no one got shot.

Special care needs to be taken when riding a two wheeled vehicle, motorized or not. Defensive driving is a must 100% of the time. Let your attention drift just once for one second and you may t-bone a pickup and get run over by a bobtail. At that point, being in the right doesn't matter. The driver of the pickup and the bobtail are just fine.

Parents need to take responsibility and teach thier children right from wrong, then punish them instead of looking the other way. It all starts at home. Someone needs to lock the thugs and their parents up and throw away the key. I'm sure if you looked, there is little to no parental involvement.

scratch and bs, you sound as though you may be contributors to their behavior.

Amazing...4 against one. That's real tough. Whatever happened to one on one solving the problems or walking away. My son was ganged up on by 4 (nameless race) and injured on a playground. My son ended up at the ER and the 4 who jumped him were not going to get anything until I went back to the school with names.
Yup, suspended and I knew the parents of everyone of them from working for a public agency. NO..not a bully but they did NOT retaliate and the parents still speak to me and the boys still speak to my son.

Straight to jail first offense. Broken jaw....parents held responsible for all medical bills.....not an insurance company....the parents of the little thugs. You want parental involvement then hold the parents responsible along with the little heathens. Your little hoodlum does something like this, they go to jail and YOU pay lots of money even if it has to come out of your welfare check. That will get you some parental involvement. The problem today is that NOBODY is held responsible for what THEY do or their offspring do. Not enough jails to house the illegitimate little heathens.....razor wire and GP large tents. The only problem with putting teens in jail is that we don't do it enough.

DEVGRU

Obviously Stevey Lewis is a punk who can't handle something alone. He needs some help.

TakeAstand

I bet they feel real tough and proud of themselves. They don't realize they are nothing but a bunch of punk cowards. 4 on 1 isn't tough it says you are a punk that thought you may get your butt whooped 1 on 1!!!!!! Little p.o.s's that will grow up to be big p.o.s.'s!!

My sympathy to the Morris family for your loss.

corgimom

You would think that Sylvester Morris, being 52, would have sense enough not to ride a moped in the dark. What a dangerous, foolhardy thing to do, and what a tragic, unnecessary death. All of those mopeds are almost impossible to see at night and their headlight is not powerful enough to see far enough down the road. My sympathies to all of the people involved.

FedupwithAUG

Corqimon, you are an idot! if Elizabeth Turner was watching what was going on she whould have never pulled out in front of Mr Morris. She was probably on a cell phone or drinking coffee. She should be arrested for murder.

patriciathomas

Once you're hit, it doesn't matter who is right or wrong. The person on the two wheeler better be a very defensive driver.

asustudent8824

every motorcyclists knows that when you get on a bike (or moped) what the risks are. not sure what the laws are in S.C, but in GA you dont have to have a motorcycle license to operate a moped under 150cc or something like that. i think even 50cc mopeds should have to obtain a motorcycle license to operate them on public roads.

pantherluvcik

madmax I didn't read anything about their parents status or welfare in this article, maybe I missed something.
