Community members working to improve the community. Sounds normal to me. This is the type of volunteer work every civics class took part in, way back when I was in school.
Our United States military is expected to perform above and beyond the call of duty. On Feb. 21, I observed U.S. Army soldiers working hand-in-hand with Richmond County school system employees setting up computers at the Academy of Richmond County and George P. Butler High School. These selfless citizens chose to sacrifice a Saturday of leisure to volunteer their time and expertise to help update the school system's technology, and to provide 21st-century technological opportunities for our children -- tomorrow's leaders.
The citizens of Richmond County should be applauded for supporting the special purpose local option sales tax that made the funds available for these purchases. Your support of the SPLOST also has made available monies for purchases such as textbooks, computer software, buses and public safety vehicles.
Congratulations to our military and civilian communities for their dedication and much-needed assistance. I thank you for going above and beyond the call of duty in support our most precious resource: our children.
