Film focuses on global poverty

Augusta will be one of 450 cities across the nation today playing host to a one-night film event that highlights global poverty.

A Powerful Noise, a documentary about women empowerment, will premiere at 8 p.m. at the Regal Augusta Exchange 20 movie theater, said Michelle Portillo, spokeswoman for Fathom, the entertainment company bringing the film to movie theaters. The showing will help celebrate International Women's Day, which is Sunday.

The documentary, directed by Atlanta filmmaker Tom Capello, focuses on three women in Bosnia, Mali and Vietnam, Mrs. Portillo said.

"The film highlights their lives and shows how they're empowering women in their communities," she said. "It's a global look at the problems and solutions facing women."

The three subjects help educate women, reduce unemployment and raise awareness about HIV and AIDS in their communities, Mr. Cappello said.

Tickets have already sold out in Washington, D.C.; Denver; and San Francisco. A portion of the ticket sales will be donated to the Cooperative for Assistance in Relief Everywhere, Mr. Cappello said. CARE provides programs on economic opportunity, maternal health and HIV and AIDS awareness in close to 70 countries. CARE also helped fund the film, Mr. Cappello said.

After the film is shown, a panel discussion featuring former U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, actress Natalie Portman, New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof, model Christy Turlington Burns and CARE CEO Helene Gayle will be simulcast live at the movie theater.

Mr. Cappello said he hopes that people who view the 80-minute film will be inspired to help fight global poverty.

"I gained a tremendous appreciation for the courage and perseverance of these women," he said. "These women want peace. They want their children to be educated. After watching this, I hope viewers want to galvanize this movement."

Save the children with Madelin Albright. I'll bet this useful community effort is costing the taxpayer a pretty penny.

I believe I am more inspired to help poverty locally...........

karmakills123 ..I glad to hear someone other than me feeling that way. Why do some want to help the world when we have plenty of those here in the US..like children who need help.

politicallyNcorrect1

I think some do it cause they know they will get more media attention & coverage by wanting to help those from another country. Ego..

Birth control is the answer.

SargentMidTown

If you breed like rats then you are going to live like rats. Every country is not as generous and stupid as the US is to prop up generational welfare recipients. Birth control can create a heaven on earth: http://www.theatlantic.com/doc/200807/memphis-crime

I have been to some of the most poverty stricken nations imaginable includng Vietnam, Philippines and S. Korea. Unitl these people are educated on birth control and practice it (they don't and won't) they will always be impoverished much like India.

Next thing you know, they will be making movies of women who live in poverty in Appalachia!! But, then that would mean they would have to say what they are doing about that, so I guess that won't happen.

You know what is worse than all this? People who go on "American Idol" and have three children with a father no where in sight, and make the statement that "American Idol" will mean a better life for them and their children. Talk about ignorance!!!!

LaTwon

albright had no problem with 1/2 million arab children starving or dying from lack of medicine during the embargo of iraq. when questioned she replied "we think it is worth it". pathetic. perhaps it was because they were muslim children. rot in hell.........
