Paine squads open play in tournament

The Paine College women and men play their first games today in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament in Birmingham, Ala.

The 11th-seeded Lady Lions will face sixth-seeded Albany State at 11 a.m., while the 13th-seeded Lions will meet 12th-seeded Stillman at 3 p.m.

Linebacker coach John Jancek has been named co-coordinator for the Georgia defense, head coach Mark Richt said.

Jancek is entering his fifth season with the Bulldogs.

Bears beat Pacers for 10th win in row

In Aiken, Chris Henderson went the distance and struck out 11 as No. 8 Lenoir-Rhyne beat USC Aiken 3-1 for its 10th win in a row.

USC Aiken's Clayton Knight took a one-hitter and 1-0 lead into the eighth before Chris Tucker doubled in a run and Stephen Andrews hit a two-run homer for the Bears (14-4). Knight (1-1) suffered the loss despite striking out 10 in 7q innings.

Jamie Benjamin scored the only run for USC Aiken (7-9) on an error in the fifth.

USC Aiken's game today at Belmont Abbey has been rescheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday at Lake Olmstead Stadium because of snow on the Crusaders' field in Belmont, N.C. The game will be part of a twin bill for Belmont Abbey, which is scheduled to play Augusta State at 3 p.m.

- In Columbia, Whit Merrifield hit a two-run homer and Blake Cooper and Adam Westmoreland combined on a five-hit shutout as South Carolina defeated Georgia State 2-0.

- In Clemson, S.C., Furman scored two runs in the 14th inning to beat the Tigers 4-2.

- Erskine's Cody McElhaney , a Midland Valley High graduate, has been named Conference Carolinas Player of the Week.

The freshman shortstop went 5 for 9 with three homers, four RBI and five runs scored in two games.

College Softball

Lady Jaguars swept by the Lady Pacers

In Aiken, USC Aiken swept a doubleheader from Augusta State, 3-1 and 4-1, at Satcher Field in games that did not count in the Peach Belt Conference standings.

Whitney Clary had three hits, an RBI and run for USC Aiken (14-6). Nikki Sidaway had two hits, two RBI and two runs.

Angii Verbeelen scored the only run in the first game for Augusta State (12-8) on a passed ball. Kristen Jones tripled in the only run in the second game.

Kathleen Nichols allowed one run on eight hits and struck out eight to earn her fourth win in the opener. Toni Flessate recorded her seventh win in the second game, allowing a run on six hits and striking out seven.

College Tennis

Ex-Lakeside player honored by school

Sewanee's Will Holloway , a Lakeside High alum, was named the school's Tiger of the Week for the week ending March 1.

In Sewanee's 5-4 victory over Cumberland, the sophomore beat Johannes Jonsson 6-1, 6-0 at No. 5 singles and combined with Andrew Jolley to post an 8-2 win at No. 3 doubles.

Beckham near deal to finish Milan year

A deal allowing David Beckham to extend his stay with AC Milan through the end of the season is close but not yet complete, Milan chairman Adriano Galliani said.

Miller done for year, undecided on future

Bode Miller won't ski again this season but has yet to decide on retirement.

"At this time I find more happiness doing other things than being on tour," he said in his online diary.
