Brothers nab top spots at hometown racetrack
Kyle Busch moved to back of field after engine change

LAS VEGAS --- Engine trouble kept Kyle Busch parked in the Las Vegas Motor Speedway garage area for all but five laps Friday. The fifth lap, however, was good enough to give the hometown driver the pole position for the Shelby 427.

A blown engine will keep him from starting the race from the first spot. He will be credited for winning the pole and the track record, but Busch will have to start Sunday's race from the 43rd spot since his team changed the engine. NASCAR limits teams to one engine during a racing weekend.

Busch's team got only four laps of practice at speed, and they came into the qualifying session ranked 48th on the speed charts. But the 23-year-old never flinched when his car wiggled coming through the third and fourth turns, allowing him to re-write the track record at 185.995 mph.

"The car got twitchy but I got a good bite off (Turn) 4, so I stayed in it," Busch said. "We'll bide our time and figure it out when we get to the drivers meeting. Everyone did an awesome job changing the engine and getting this car ready."

His older brother, Kurt, will start on the outside pole. It's the first time those brothers finished one-two in qualifying. The last time brothers qualified on the front row was 2000 when Rusty Wallace won the pole at Martinsville, Va., and Kenny Wallace was second.

Kurt Busch's speed was 185.707 mph. Jimmie Johnson was third, followed by David Reutimann, Marcos Ambrose, Ryan Newman, Kasey Kahne, Mark Martin, Kevin Harvick and Tony Stewart. Johnson will slide onto the front row next to Kurt Busch during the warmup laps.

Reutimann and Ambrose also will have to give up their starting spots because of engine changes after time trials.

Matt Kenseth, who is coming off consecutive victories to open the season, qualified 45th at 182.143 mph. He will use a provisional exemption to make the field.

The racing weekend gave the Busch brothers a chance to see old friends and eat anything but a home-cooked meal. They grew up in Las Vegas. In fact, Kurt's first job was reading water meters for the city.

The drivers' families moved to North Carolina to be closer to their racing careers, but their old hangouts still create fond memories.

"There are a lot of friends that you get to see and catch up with that you text back and forth during the year but you never get to see them, so that's always cool to come out here to the race and stuff," Kyle Busch said. "You get to go to some of the restaurants that you liked here growing up and stuff, so that's always cool."

They also know all the back streets to navigate around some of the biggest traffic jams in the country, including Interstate 15 which has been under repair since NASCAR started coming to Las Vegas 12 years ago.

Kurt Busch is playing host to friends like drag racing legend Don "The Snake" Prudhomme and comedian Ron White.

"Coming home gets me pumped up for hopefully some good things this weekend," he said. "I've got a busy schedule. You just try to get caught up while keeping track of the main focus, which is the race car."
