Rename parkway after Arnold Palmer

As another Masters Tournament draws near, the city starts to slowly turn its thoughts to the fact that, for one all too short of a week, the city of Augusta will be the center of the universe for the sporting world.

So many cities, including Atlanta, can only wish Bobby Jones had built his greatest masterpiece in their fair city, but he didn't. He chose a quaint little escape for him and his closest friends, to elude the hustle and bustle of the busy city life. There was no reason, either monetary or momentous, that drew him here. It was the simple fact that he fell in love with the city and its residents.

There is another champion that has visited our fair city for more than 50 years, who has also fallen in love with Augusta and continues to return. He has honored us by being instrumental in the design and layout of both the First Tee and Forest Hills Country Club, and his life has exemplified the meaning of hard work and diligence.

This city has seen fit to name an expressway after its greatest friend, which now encircles us. I wish that it could also see fit, with the completion of the extension to the River Watch Parkway, to consider the possibility of renaming it the Arnold Palmer Parkway, which would, I think, add to the city's historical mystique.

beats riverwatch parkway as a name at anyrate. can't see a dam (sic) bit of the river coz of the levee and them pollutin' trees.

Also, it would eliminate the inappropriate and clumsy mouthful "riverwatch" that some genius saddled us with.

Kudos to Mr. Deas for this idea. Great way to honor a living legend in the world of golf.

Great idea until Tiger wins about 5 more times

You could name the road Arnold Palmer Parkway...and the trees surrounding the parkway? Wait for it......Wait for it......Tiger Woods!!!

justthefacts

Without Arnold, there may never have been a Tiger. But, in Tiger's later yrs, all things considered, a road named after to him would be great as well.

Good point tiger woods is going to pass Jack and Arnold. So lets wait for a couple of year's. And turn another pkwy into Arnold not riverwatch pkwy.

This is a pretty good idea. River Watch doesn't' really mean anything. We have a photo of Arnie sitting on a float in a downtown parade - he seemed to like Augusta. The only reservation is that it locks us in the past. Maybe River Watch is better after all, the more Augusta remembers that a river runs through it the better.

wouldn't Arnold Palmer drive be more appropriate?

Bobby Jones built his dream course here not because he fell in love with Augusta and its residents. He built his course here because he fell in love with Fruitlands Nursery site.. as it provided a perfect topography for a golf course, being in the gently rolling hills of the piedmont fall line.

I always thought at the very beginning it should be named for Palmer or Nicklaus... Riverwatch is a dumb and awkward name. If I remember the paper asked people back then what they thought the new road should be named.. and no one came up with Riverwatch.. though there were several nods for Palmer and Nicklaus. I believe some local politician ended up naming it "Riverwatch."
