North Augustan's count at a dozen aces

North Augusta's David Clark has an easy way to remember how many aces he has.

"It's an even dozen and counting," said Clark, who turned 50 on Feb. 5.

Clark's 12th ace came last week on the uphill sixth hole at North Augusta Golf & Country Club. He hit a 7-iron on the 165-yard hole. Witnesses were Ryan Craven, Dwight Pope, Matt Ricker and Mike Perron.

What's his secret?

"I play pretty good and a lot of it is luck," said Clark, who has made seven of his aces at North Augusta Golf opportunity; take advantage of it.'

"Sometimes," Usry said, "things work out for the better."

ACE GOLFER: Odell Pearson, the first golfer to ace all four par-3 holes at Aiken's Palmetto Golf Club, died earlier this month at 96.

In 1987, Pearson completed the "par-3 slam" at the historic course when he aced the difficult 16th hole.

By 2000, Pearson had aced all the pars 3s again and a plaque near the 16th tee was erected to commemorate the feat.

Palmetto director of golf Tom Moore, who played "a lot" of golf with Pearson, said his friend had 21 career aces.

"Once, in a matter of five or six weeks, he made six aces," Moore said. "I told him he was killing me having to fill out the hole-in-one forms."

BENEFIT DAY: Wedges & Woods driving range, which is under the new ownership of Nick Prokosa, will hold what it calls a "re-opening Grand Opening" on March 28.

The day will include a silent auction, free clinics from 11 a.m. to noon and 2 to 3 p.m., in addition to closest-to-the-pin contests with proceeds benefitting the Children's Miracle Network.

Reservations aren't required, Prokosa said.
